  1. Hey John Unlikely, but it could be possible. Check and see if there is a firmware upgrade for your zoom. you might find info after you upgrade Cheers John
  2. Hey I got to try one! They've got a really nice clean, round tone, which is what we're after. You can get a more aggressive tone depending on pickup, tone settings and picking position, but the clean round tone is more useful in terms of recording. After all, it is easier to add colouration than it is to remove. Cheers John
  3. Hey I think the big problem is at the other end. Production companies often work to tight schedules. The last thing they will want is to spend ages selecting segments, only to have the artist pull them at the last minute, or simply just to wait for an artist to approve them. I mean what happens when the artist is in Iceland for a month? If you can nitigate this issue, to make it as appealing to production companies as it is to artists I think your idea could work well. Saddly, Production companies make decisions based on budget as much as quality, While your service may grow in terms of a quality artist database, if libraries offer something almost as good, but with none of the risks or potential hic ups, and no implications to the production company in terms of time for a project, they will choose the standard library licensing scheme. Cheers John
  4. Hey Anyone got any personal experience with MusicMan SUB 4 string bass? I'm sorting out buying one for a friend so any opinions on the specific bass or their bass guitars in general would be useful. Cheers John
  5. Hey Nick Sorry, just saw this Depending on the engineer and desk set up, the tape version could be the same or different, though it is quite common to set up a separate mix from the main pa out. The biggest difference is where the backline is not miked up, or there is a reliance on acoustic volume for some instruments - this obviously doesn't go through the pa. EQ? Have a look at the suggestions here: http://www.songstuff.com/articles.php?selected=53 Outside playing means no natural reverb (although it does depend on where you are playing.) It also means playing at a slightly louder volume. There is nothing to contain or reflect the sound so it disipates. Lastly, speakers placed behind and off to the side can work, sort of, but be wary of feedback, and it has to be said using monitors is A LOT easier. Cheers John

    Marketing

Hey I guess most of you will have spent at least some time promoting your music in the real world and/or online. I thought it would be worth discussing and comparing notes. For example guerilla marketing versus paid services? Do you plan a campaign, or do you just start promoting somehow? Is there any coordination in your promotion activities? Do you set aside a budget specifically for marketing and promotion? What sort of techniques/services do you find worthwhile? What doesn't work? Don't feel you have to stick to the questions above, they're just intended to get you thinking about the subject! Cheers John
  7. Hey John How are you getting on with your mixes? Any improvement? Has the advice helped?
  8. Hey I'm looking forward to seeing the results! Hey, how about a link to Songstuff, or join or new music resource web ring? http://www.songstuff.com/webring.php Cheers John
  9. Hi I would also think developing links with production houses in general would be a good idea. Best practice. I really mean full disclosure of costs and charges, full transparency of transactions, a proper street address phone etc, full disclosure of industry partners, list of directors if you have any, professional body membership details, support service agreement, documented mechanism for resolving any disputes, realistic contracts etc. Another obvious thing is the contract for you to host and distribute audio for the artist. Getting a balance is increasingly important. Artists now understand their rights far more. Under play the contract and you could leave yourself open to litigation, overplay it and the artists will stay away. A lot there, but that stuff will really make a difference.
  10. Hey Apparently Kazaa has just reached a deal with the music industry in the US, paying compensation to the tune of $100,000,000. The end of illegal file sharing? there's not many left, and they are a lot smaller than Kazaa. Cheers John
  11. Hey Sorry I missed this when you first posted. It's a reasonable idea, but there are similar services available, like songbrokers dot com (I think they are still going). The mainstream music scene seems to have rejected their business practice because they were charging artists upfront for listing etc. which is not the way the rest of the industry works. I say that only from comments that have been made to me about them. Even if the idea is not original, there is still room for competition. After all, it is a massive market. You would need to be clear about the service you offer, including pitching. You would also need best practice to set you apart from the sharks. For me the one BIG thing you would need to have is prove-able industry contacts to take it to another level. Cheers John
  12. Hey Steve Come on then, let's see a picture of you circa 1975? What was it? Kipper tie, flaired cords, denim jacket and sideburns! Or were you more a disco dude with open shirt and medallion! Cheers John
  13. very true. There are msn and yahoo messenger specific viuses. I don't think that was what Nigel meant, but they do exist. Although MSN security March 2005 (when Nigel posted this originally) was pretty dodgey. But hey.... welcome to Songstuff btw! Maybe post a hello in the intro thread to introduce yourself. It's a good way for folks to get to know you. Cheers John
  14. Hey My old guitar case was covered in stickers but I don't know if I still have it. These days I use a soft cover gig bag, so no stickers Cheers John
  15. Hey I thought a little poll would be useful to see the distribution of set up types. Cheers John
  16. Already added! (on my page at least...) Tom?
  17. Let's go more generic and PC with this... Sensory Challenged Fruity Al and His Receptacle of Cloven-Footed Mammals Kinda rolls off the tongue don't you think?
  18. Listen Blind Boy, don't get yer goats in a twist
  19. Excellent! Your bluegrass name can now be Blind Boy Al And The Box Of Goats
  20. Hey On the pre-recording compressor, I'd still recommend the Behringer Composer Pro. It's a great little unit, and at abou £50 you won't break the bank. However... if no of tracks isn't a big issue, I prefer to record and keep a completely untreated track, which I can then compress and save as a separate file. I guess it depends on the overall dynamic spread and the singers ability to control their volume etc. What's your recording set up like? Cheers John
