Challenge #33 - Second That Emotion

Recommended Posts

Hi Gang

Your mission, should you choose to accept it is to pick an emotion and write a song about it. Sounds easy. But you know this group, it is rarely so straight forward. This time there is a list of emotions that your song CANNOT be about:

Love

Hate

Jealousy

Anger

Sadness

You can pick any other emotion or emotions you like. It should convey that emotion clearly and it shouldn't include the word itself of a version of it. Ie if your song is about happiness you cannot include happy, or happiness or other version of the word happy in the song.

Post your finished work to the challenge discussion board, include #33 in the topic title.

That's it :)

Cheers

John

I like this. There are two main schools of thought when it comes to emotions. Robert Plutchik's theory, and Book Two of Aritotles Rehtoric...both are lists of 8 base emotions and some would not be classed by many as emotions. But it gives us plenty to work from :D

Certainly according to psychologists there are anywhere from 4 - 8 basic building block emotions. In my list I have certainly gone for a more fine grained approach. For example, according to psychologists anger, disgust and hate are all nuances of the same base emotion... Anger, however in society at large we do readily recognise that there are differences between these emotions. If you look at Plutarch's emotion wheel there are certainly emotions on there that people wouldn't necessarily recognise as emotions, while there are many that they would feel are missing.

Some differences are about a mixture of base emotions, or the scale, or what the emotion is directed at or related to. None the less, I wanted to remove many common emotions in songwriting while still leaving many others.

Is love an emotion? Maybe not to psychologists. What the heck, we're songwriters!

"For example, according to psychologists anger, disgust and hate are all nuances of the same base emotion... "....I like this, as it could help one to flesh out a song by relating the different stages of experiencing this one base emotion. One verse digust, progressing to anger, resulting in hate. (an example of course since we arent allowed to use anger)

Hi John,

I am fairly new to this group and just wondered what the deadline might be for exercise 33. I just came across it and like it a lot.

All the best,

David
