Songs About Your Family

Recommended Posts

Hi All, I see John puts up all the challenges so i wanted to see if another John could. I'd like to see how many songs/lyrics about your family you can come up with. I will share one to start if off. Sorry, no prizes.

Rebels From the Northlands

He was from Connecticut, she from the Garden State
Running from her family, Running from his fate
Her alcoholic father had quite a heavy hand
The rules out of a bottle she couldn’t understand
His brothers were all perfect, he was the blackest sheep
His parent’s expectations, he could never meet

Rebels from the northlands--------------------------------------------------- {Chorus
Ended up down south
Rebels from the northlands
Lived from hand to mouth
Looking for a new life
Trying to fit in
What would be the chances
She’d end up with him

Neither one had any clue, each would find their mate
In a diner east of Dallas, that took the hardhat trade
Their glances met across a plate she served of eggs ’n grits
As magically they saw what would be a perfect fit
That was fifty years and more ‘n now I tell their tale
My Mom and Dad have passed but their memory won’t pale

Rebels from the northlands--------------------------------------------------- {Chorus
Ended up down south
Rebels from the northlands
Lived from hand to mouth
Looking for a new life
Trying to fit in
What would be the chances
She’d end up with him

Instrumental break 12 bars

Rebels from the northlands----------------------------------------------- {Chorus
Ended up down south
Rebels from the northlands
Lived from hand to mouth
Looking for a new life
Trying to fit in
What would be the chances
She’d end up with him

That was fifty years and more ‘n now I tell their tale-------------- 4 bars
My Mom and Dad have passed but their memory won’t pale

All My Sisters Drank My Booze

Peggy L Smart-Barnes copyright 01/29/2017

Sheesh you can't turn your back for a minute
Before you know it they are in it

Baileys in the pantry
Tecate in the fridge
Myers in the basement
And they only left a smidge

The local vodka decoy
Didn't fool too long
Found the private stash
As they broke into a song

Of course
The Mike's are Harder
16 ounces tall
Can't leave an opened can
Or anything at all

All my sisters drank my booze
Smoked my ciggies too
what the hell am I gonna do

with my sisters

:)

My brothers and I used to have an agreement, sort of. we didn't make lots of money but we all got checks back during tax time and whichever of us got one took the rest out drinking till all of the money was gone. Interesting times. I think we would have gotten along well with your family. It's a fun lyric.

Thanks! Get along well or dangerously well? haha.

This is a downright sister lyric. It was just a fun ditty. I love to write. But i think there are family influences, to a varying degree, in many of my lyrics.  Some lyrics straight-out real, but most often, hyper-sensationalized or contrary :)

Heartfelt. You paint a great picture, especially being here in north Texas.  Eggs 'n grits.. love it.

Thank you. You may not hear it in my accent, but I'm a down home boy, born in the south then my parents moved us to NJ when I was 5. I still ain't forgave 'em. Here's another family portrait:

My Uncle Earl

The first time I saw uncle Earl

I did what was expected

I never noticed he was there

Just totally neglected

I didn’t see he never slouched

The steel within his eyes

The muscles rippling everywhere

Took years to realize

He was an ordinary hero------------------------------ {Chorus

This man my Uncle Earl

His outside like an oyster

But deep inside the pearl

How many never noticed

This man my Uncle Earl

This man my Uncle Earl

He lived with my grandma

I thought it was to hide

His failure in society

Ah, but what’s inside

Passing by his room one day

I saw some pictures there

A soldier returned home from war

His medals everywhere

He was an ordinary hero------------------------------ {Chorus

This man my Uncle Earl

His outside like an oyster

But deep inside the pearl

How many never noticed

This man my Uncle Earl

This man my Uncle Earl

Him on a motorcycle

With women by the score

This man I had overlooked

I found was so much more

I finally sat and talked to him

Asked him why would he

Settle for this dull life

With all that he could be

Turnaround 8 bars

He said this here’s my Mama with no one else to care--------------- {Bridge

I promised her when all had gone I would be standing here

He was an ordinary hero------------------------------ {Chorus

This man my Uncle Earl

His outside like an oyster

But deep inside the pearl

How many never noticed

This man my Uncle Earl

This man my Uncle Earl

This man MY Uncle Earl

For You

(V1)

Little oriental notebook

Which I took

And I read every detail

As gospel

‘Cause I love you

Took me way back into hindsight

Of your past life

I saw myself there in you

And I love you

(Pre Chorus)

I’ll still try to paint

Pictures of paradise for you

And I’ll write such loving letters

To get you through

Because you always did it for me too

(Chorus)

For you

I’d build a new world paved with flowers

It's true

I’ll be there through the darkest hour

You fought my fires

You denounced the liars

Just there through and through

So I’ll always be loving you

And this one’s for you

(V2)

Coldest nights spent in the kitchen

Bright lights blinding

And I fear there’s nothing I can do

To fix you

Now the clock is striking thirteen

Ripped at the seams

You couldn’t have seen this coming so soon

Just know that I love you

(Pre Chorus)

I’ll still try to paint

Pictures of paradise for you

And I’ll write such loving letters

To get you through

Because you always did it for me too

(Chorus)

For you

I’d build a new world paved with flowers

It's true

I’ll be there through the darkest hour

You fought my fires

You denounced the liars

Just there through and through

So I’ll always be loving you

And this one’s for you

(Bridge)

My best friend til the the end of time

Just know I’ll remain by your side

Even if you’re not always here

I know that you will always care

(Pre Chorus)

And I’ll still try paint

Pictures of paradise for you

And I’ll write such loving letters

To get you through

Because you always did it for me too

(Chorus)

For you

I’d build a new world paved with flowers

It's true

I’ll be there through the darkest hour

You fought my fires

You denounced the liars

Just there through and through

So I’ll always be loving you

And this one’s for you

Hi All,

This is a member's  challenge that I came across from a couple years ago or so.  Thought it was a good one to bring back up. I had some fun with it and my sisters. If you want to join in, that would be great! Looking forward to seeing your song/lyrics about your family.

Neat lawns,child pawns,

love takes,heart breaks,

words cut,wounds bleed,

people leave,

come and go,

stone's throw,

rock the cradle,rule the world,

set the scene
