Top 100 songwriters...

Recommended Posts

Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen would never ever be in my list, even if the list goes for 1000 people...

:D I think I would probably agree with that Hari. Although they may be in my top 100 prolific songwriters...

It isn't representative. There's no one from Songstuff!

I don't even know where to begin taking issue with this list.

Paul McCartney has no business on it. He was nothing without John.

Surely there are better living songwriters than Dolly Parton.

Steve Earle, while I like him, should be a lot lower than 35.

Where is Guy Clark?

I disagree. I think Paul McCartney should be on there. And I think John was nothing without Paul! The pap that Lennon turned out after they split is proof of that! 'Imagine' and 'Woman' are two songs I'm sure are instrumental in causing more suicides than any other songs! I also think that if you look at some of the songs Dolly P wrote, you might be pleasently surprised!

I concur wholeheartedly. :thumb23:

I regard McCartney as a pop song master-craftsman.

Lennon was, by contrast, an artist

Burt Bacharach is my favorite songwriter. Other top songsmiths IMHO:

Carole King

Holland Dozier Holland (Motown writers)

Lennon-McCartney

Barry Mann-Cynthia Weil (60's Classics)

Robert Lamm (Chicago-25 or 6 to 4, among others)

Randy Newman

Paul Simon (50 Ways.....was GENIUS)!

Dan Fogelberg

Joni Mitchell

Gordon Lightfoot

I disagree with Tom, too. Steve Earle should be a lot higher than 35! >:( Blasphemy!

Glad to see Aimee Mann and John Hiatt on the list. But Surfjan Stevens and Outkast? P-ur-le-e-e-ase!

Neil Young is indeed a great songwriter but in truth he has been repeating himself for a long time.
