Hi, wanted to introduce myself

I'm 26, and have been writing songs for the past 3 years. I started doing it when I was going through an emotional period getting over my ex-girlfriend.

I really have no musical background. I like singing, but have never done it in any large venue. I have very little skills in terms of playing instruments: I once taught myself piano at age 20 but I forgot how to play b/c I didn't keep up with it, and I can play a bit of the drums. I believe I have a good musical ear though, and can discern what sounds harmonious and what sounds discordant. I'm close friends with a musician and he has helped me in critiquing my songs in terms of their lyrics and melodies. So, I don't know how to tell what chords I am singing, I just make them up. I've only let a few people listen to my songs over the years, and I've only made a full instrumental recording of one of them (the first one I wrote).

So, I'm joining the forum, because I'm curious: am I a terrible singer/songwriter, am I ok, or is there potential? I'd say, without being too negative, my skills are probably in the "terrible" category, but that doesn't bother me, because I enjoy being able to express myself in this way when the moment moves me to do so. So, I'd love your brutal honesty in critiquing me, and I hope you enjoy :)

Hey

Welcome to Songstuff!

Take some time to review others work to a reasonable level too. I find that as useful in honing my skills as getting my own work critiqued. It helps you sort out what works and what doesn't without the emotional entanglement we may have in our own lyrics, plus we can observe both iterations during re-writes and you can observe how perspective and attachment effect our own writing.
