Finger Stretching

Recommended Posts

How many frets can you span? Its mostly chords that will test your limit. The scale of the instrument will vary and of course you have a better chance at the upper register. I once bought a tutorial book that was useless to me.

Micky Baker's Hot Guitar. All the chord shapes were designed to show off how far Baker could stretch his fingers. I could hardly play a single one.

I bought that book! I found it OK. But I have a Les Paul which has a fairly short scale length. I did struggle with a few of the seven finger chords.....

You're joking! Can you provide photographic proof?

I challenge you to a stretch-a-thon. Index finger of the 1st fret and see how far up the neck you can place the pinky!

I have very small hands but...

Here's a 1st to 7th

And here's the octave 1st to 8th

So it goes the other way. Seriously though I have occasionally been known to play chords on the bass that way round

And here's 1st to 9th on my son's Ibanez - and both notes sound as proper notes!
