  • Songstuff Writer and Artist Development Challenges

    By john

Independent writers and artists face several large disadvantages when they are compared to signed, mainstream writers and artists.  Disadvantages that add up to making it a competition that indies can’t win. Hell they can’t even compete.   Lack of budget and poor contacts are fairly obvious disadvantages. Lack of experience and a lack of knowledge restricts songwriters and artists alike. Lack of an overall strategy, and a limited set of incomplete tactics, makes for a critical problem

Death - The Big Scary Word

Is he smiling when he dies? Yeah, hell yeah. The thing is, about 100 people in the whole world think there's nothing on the "other side". Well, I do not believe in God or religion, but I still think that there's something else on the other side. It's like that hollow feeling to think that a soul or a spirit has been manufactured and built up, and all that mental energy, the physical energy that could be made by a being, just disappears? If you're still not getting me, then think of it like this;

What People Say They Like...

Bryan Marvis (THS speech coach) has written a screenplay with his sister—nice, post-Apocalypse thing that would make a good movie—and would like to do a reading at the Arts Center. I think it could be pulled off, though I’ve never done one of those things before. I envision something that comes a little close to an actual play, with about 12 actors and actresses playing (reading) all the roles and some quick costume changes to keep the audience focused (since the play takes place in four diffe

Where To Draw The Line?

The thing is, as someone who likes to accept most things (aside from organised religion bar Ancient Egyptians) I like almost all kinds of "music". Why is music in quotations? Cos where does one draw the line at what is music and what is not? RAP, also known as.... i don't know. What the hell does RAP even mean? Rhythm and Pace? Really Awful Poetry? Run and Puke? All have been suggested and more, and to be honest, some rap is absolute sh*t. But I loved this one Rap song by T.I. and Rihanna, Li

About "angel," And Taking Risks...

I think I like “Angel in Chains.” I know it could be done better—and I would like to hear it recorded by the crew of heavy-metal musicians John thinks he can assemble. (I assume I’d still be the one doing the vocals.) But as a foray into Something Completely Different, it’s not bad. (Link, by the way, is http://www.soundclick.com/share?songid=9144855. It’s also posted on ReverbNation.) It’s not really death metal: death metal’s subject matter is, I think, more fantasy stuff—vampires, g

Gigs And Jams And Angel In Chains (Oh, My)...

Spent the better part of Thursday at the Arts Center, doing the organization’s taxes (which also entailed figuring out how to do it—I’d never done a Form 990 before). I do enjoy this kind of work. I bet I could set up their financials so that it’d be easier—maybe even automatic—for me (or someone) to do this next time around. I am good at figuring out ways to make things take less time; I suppose that could be regarded as efficiency, though I’d be tempted to call it simple laziness. The resu

"deathgrass" Benefit Concert Thoughts...

Tentatively, SATURDAY, JUNE 17 will be the Deathgrass benefit concert for the Food Pantry. That’s the date we can get the Dance Floor at City Hall—provided we reserve it quickly. I am pretty sure we’ll need a “deputy drummer”—I don’t think Chris will be recovered enough to play (but I could be wrong). This will be our third concert for the Food Pantry, and I would like to take advantage of every one of our learning experiences to date. I’d like to do this concert as a 2-hour show (again)

Angel In Chains...

Well, “Angel in Chains” has a chorus now, I think, and a possibly compelling Keith Richards-style riff (not actually original, though—I robbed it from a piece of pop music, and simply applied it to metal, which I don’t think anyone’s ever done before). I’m still not clear where the song is going. From the chorus, it sounds like the guy is leaving the girl (or girl the guy—like most of my songs, it’s gender-unspecific)—because said girl (or guy) is plumb crazy. Said girl (or guy) may even have

Census Worker, Me (&c.)...

Little old census-taker, me… Despite my (frequent) complaints, I do enjoy the work. It is money (though very little money), and it’s nice to be getting paid for doing something. It does look like I’ll have some extra time to do Census work in that I hadn’t counted on; for the next month, there won’t be music at City Hall on Friday nights, or at the Garibaldi Pub on Wednesday afternoons, because the respective organizers will be out of town. There will at least be music at the Tillamook Libra

Val Concert Post-Mortem...

Yes, it was good. (These days, I almost expect nothing less.) Mike harmonized on the choruses of most of my songs (and it sounded way better than my monotone), and we had a sax player show up out of the blue, in time to play on our last song, “Goin’ Down the Road Feelin’ Bad,” and made that sound real good. (And he lives in Tillamook, and would like to play more with us.) I hope people thought we sounded good. I did notice a number of people seemed to have come specifically to hear us

A Blues Waltz?

Got to visit Chris at the nursing home; he’s doing lots better. A friend is bringing him a drum pad, which is probably some of the best exercise for the arms he could get. Took him best wishes from everybody. And I checked out The Landing (first time I’d ever been in the bar part). It’s a little small; fitting the equipment for two bands, the crowd they’re expecting, and tables for food and raffle items is not going to leave a lot of room for dancing. I’m glad everybody’s friendly. The

Teaching!

I'm teaching two drum students (!!!). I love teaching! We've had our 2nd lesson, it's a father and son, drumset and hands respectively (for now). They know note values, have natural affinity for and will become good drummers! Get right in there and place my hands esp. on the boy's so he can feel that good wrist action. We're beginning traditional grip for both students plus reading while counting out loud. Am beginning to look into if there are others in my area wanting

Band Practice (And Chris Is Better)...

Practice today with the full band—and the band is good. Very, very good. It is an honor to play with these guys. (And to use a hackneyed phrase, I hope it’s as good for them as it is for me.) I would pay money to hear us, and I hope lots of people do. The revised April 24 setlist (1-1/2 hours, played straight through) is: Dead Things in the Shower (mod. fast two-step) Armadillo on the Interstate (slow & sleazy) Things Are Getting Better Now That Things Are Getting Worse—Gene Bu

How’s this for a Southern Pigfish album?
