  • Songstuff Writer and Artist Development Challenges

    By john

Independent writers and artists face several large disadvantages when they are compared to signed, mainstream writers and artists.  Disadvantages that add up to making it a competition that indies can’t win. Hell they can’t even compete.   Lack of budget and poor contacts are fairly obvious disadvantages. Lack of experience and a lack of knowledge restricts songwriters and artists alike. Lack of an overall strategy, and a limited set of incomplete tactics, makes for a critical problem

Dec 18 Songwriter Contest, World Theatre, Mpls

In being a newer member of MAS (Minnesota Association of Songwriters), I received word of an invite from David K Rockstarwannabe.tv to local singer/songwriters for a contest Dec 18 at the World Theatre in Minneapolis. Rockstarwannabe.tv is shown on Twin Cities cable; it is a reality show in which David K happens upon towns in Mid-America literally asking residents, "who should have 'made it'?" and featuring that unknown artist. Secondly a famous artist is featured. David K's own story of continu

The Song Without A Name

This is a song that I wrote the chorus to a year ago that I never seem to have the right verses or title for. This song is about girls in high school that seemed to fit a certain mold that I often felt like I didnt fit (a lot of the time I felt like I didnt fit in at all!). Sometimes I would get a little depressed about it. But this song is about changing all those negative feelings, and realizing that maybe I'm better off not fitting any of those labels. I'm ok just to me, and that's enough

From Edinburgh To London. From London To Paris.

As I take my first steps in London Euston station alone as sense of pride rushes through me and I smile to myself all proud until I realise that I am already in a rush, although ahead of my time, all these masses of people seem to not be content until I am rushing along also. I have been here many times before but this time it's different, this time I am a 23 year old women setting out in the world alone for the first time in her life. My very own adventure. So after managing to buy a ticke

Songstuff Is 10 Years Old Today!

First online on 29th November 2000, the first 10 years has flown by. It's a decade that has seen massive changes in the music industry with the rise in music downloads and a global recession. It's also been a decade that's been one of the most innovative regarding changes in the way artists engage with fans, with the way music is marketed and sold, and lets not forget within the music itself. Not only that but music has become a far more interactive, multimedia experience. Music videos are

Mix - "check", Master - "check"

A couple of weeks ago I was in Strype Audios mastering studio together with Tom Kvålsvoll to put the last hand on Testament. As you may know the whole album is one piece where the songs either fade over in each-other or is separated by other effects. It turns out he was the absolute right guy to master it, and after some re-work on the fade-overs to get it just right, I got the final master last Wednesday. I am now only waiting on the cover art, before sending it to the printers. Then I wi

Perfect Sunday! I havent got much music on my mind.... but hopefully will have the Youtube things going up online in the next couple of days, so will have a bit more to say. Over n Out. AndyC

The Week That Went Fast!

Its Friday, think the last time I posted it was Sunday morning.... where did the time go? I flew back to Stockholm on Monday morning (having had 3hrs sleep from the night before) and then slept! Such an amazing weekend, lovely musicians, lovely people and a wonderful recording experience! I ended up with 5 DVDs containing the session files. Pleased to say that I fired them into my MacBook, plugged it into the 002 and all worked fine! Thats the amazing thing with the Pro Tools rigs, you can

Pumpkinfest, Wedding And Foot (Oh, My)...

The Hurt Foot’s been kind of dominant the last couple of weeks; yes, it only hurts when it’s being used for standing, or walking, or touches something, but that’s, like, almost all the time. The doctor says it’s getting better—thereby convincing me he’s a more insightful man than I. And so I haven’t got much done. (Yes, the Hurt Foot is a good excuse for inactivity, too.) I finally did write the Rap for the Pumpkinfest (a relatively easy job—just have to keep in mind virtually no one in

Recording Day 2

Its early... I'll keep it short! 12 hours of recording yesterday and then beer until 2am. Now into the studio for 0900 to get the sessions ready for overdubs at 1000. A quick pic of the guys in the live room.

Recording / Producing Swedish Band

Ok, So woke up early in Stockholm to take a flight up to North Sweden for a weekend of recording the Banished Privateers. Spent the afternoon in the studio preparing for tomorrow and Sundays recording sessions. Met Nils, a lovely guy who owns a studio, near a lake, just 40mins from Umeå (Link to his studio). We are in a really nice studio in the centre of Umeå. There's 12 instruments... A couple will be DI'd as well (Double Bass and Guitars) so that we have more choice in mixdown. So most

Accounts And Finance

Today has been a day of invoicing and chatting to the accountant. I have one accountant that deals with everything for both Kayto Sound and Pop Up... makes life so easy dealing with one person. At the moment with the UK economy looking pretty sketchy we have felt a drop in demand for the music tuition company, this means that cash flow suffers a bit and its time to lock down the hatches and ride out the storm. So important to review every expense at this stage, I managed to save lots just by swi

Planning For Pumpkinfest...

As repeated storms pound (lightly) the Oregon Coast, I get to do the Marge McKinnis Thing—“I stay inside, ‘cause I want to write about love.” Between next week’s column for the paper, the Southern Oregon Songwriters’ newsletter, organizing the Wedding Setlist, and seeing if I can maybe write two songs for the writers’ group in England, there is really quite a bit to do, but I’ve done rather little of it—I’ve just read, and rested my sore foot. I’m on for the Pumpkinfest in Lafayette; the c

Screencasting And The Week Ahead

So have spent the morning doing a few ScreenCasts which we are hoping to get up on Youtube in the next couple of weeks. Mat (Producing Partner) has a meeting with a video producer on Saturday to get the intro and outro graphics sorted. Once they are done we'll start uploading. The first series will be sharing the development of the track Pearshaped Girl, which we produced for Lenny Savage a couple of months ago. The videos will show how we developed the song from the first ideas to the fin

Working On A Dance/pop Remix Today

Off to Swedish lessons in a min... but thought I'd do a quick blog about the morning. I did a bit of website updating to start the day and then spent a few hours working on a vocal track for a remix we've been asked to produce. Basically is a remix of 'video star'... the classic pop-tastic tune that was out in the 80s.. if think? We are doing a mainstream remix, 4 on the floor with vocals on top. Sounds easy, but then we looked into some reference tracks and began discovering how complex s

Day 1: Here We Go....

So I figured I'd give this a try. See how it goes and see what comes of it. Over the next week or so I'll introduce myself and tell you about the daily work thats involved in setting up and running a production company. I intend it to be honest, non-ego and sometimes factual. We get to see another side of the music industry. We link the artist to the labels and the public. We get to manipulate, inspire, focus and explore music in a very controlled way. Its not rocket science, but its a bit
