  1. I am guilty of paying scant attention to song formats, and it catches me out sometimes when recording. It is actually very helpful to understand the framework when moving beyond the ideas stage. Nice job FW. The examples given are especially helpful.
  2. Born on the wrong planet - String Cheese Incident
  3. congratulations that man! Dont forget us. We need audio techies.
  4. minor 7th s should be easier to play than regular minors if you are barring.
  5. I know what you mean. Could it work in 6/8 instead? There are more modern examples of this about I think. The challenge of 3/4 could be fun. What about an accent on the 2nd? Weird maybe but might have posibilities?
  6. Hi Ludo As this line is the crux of the opus, it should be clearer I think. It does not make sense as a double statement, not even in an abstract way. 'In vain' means 'for nothing', so anything in vain can never be necessary. Even as a rhetorical question it's muddled. 'Was it necessary to die' would be stronger. Also, line two has a mistake. Can I suggest a re-write? regards Rudi
  7. Thank you. Pretty Good article too.
  8. This link appears to be broken. Adding Color and Richness to Common Chords
  9. Ive never known anyone use an up stroke with a thumb pick.
  10. Ok. To use your own example, lets say you have these 3 chords with the 1st repeated again at the end: F#m 7 : Bsus4 : A9-7 : F#m7 What is the melody?
  11. Hi HS, I'm curious. Are you suggesting that a chord pattern is a melody? You could extract many melodies from a chord sequence, but a melody over those chords need not use any of the notes in the chords.
  12. Mountains of the Moon - Grateful Dead Moonchild - nice choice!
  13. Listened to wings. I really liked it even though it is not the kind of thing that appeals to me. So thats more than just a good job I reckon. Tidy job
  14. Right. The media moguls have replaced real people with answerphones. I see fewer real people every time I leave the house.
  15. Queen Jane Approximately - Bob Dylan
  16. Choruses that work well are simple & open ended (not too specific / open to other interpretations).
  17. ideally it should be both first. Its only happened a couple of times though. It alway used to be the melody first, then I got in a rut (same rhyming patterns). Then I tried lyrics first, and that gave me hugh challenges with melodies. Now I just write lyrics whenever I can (in norebooks) and when I get tune ideas I re-read the notebooks. One of these days its all going to come together & work properly.
  18. I cant offer much in the way of advice. In my experience, the worst thing to do is to use force. Preserve the melody by writing or recording it. Then leave it alone. Put it from your mind. Either your mind will work on it subconciously and produce something, or you can revisit it afresh later, hopefully with a wider perspective. good luck
