Hello From Key West

I am an avid writer of abstract narrative poetry, and over the past year I have been experimenting with evolvong poems to songs.....not an easy task. I'm doing my best to learn song structure. My other problem is that I don't play an instrument now, but I am a classicaly trained violinist from the age of 6, but I gave it up years ago. The upside is that my ear is trained, but I am unable to put my words to melody, etc. Its a tricky question, which comes first: words or music....for me its words because i cannot at this time produce the music.

Anyway, that's me, and I look forward to being a part of this forum.

hi and welcome to Songstuff :) If you can hum a tune you can write melody. Grab your smart phone or any mobile recording device and you are all set. While that isn't a finished recording it is perfectly good for the purpose of writing. :) If you can learn guitar or piano you can also write some basic chords, though I am sure your trained ear will be a great help you don't need tobe at performance level for the writing process. :)

Hi and welcome.

This is a big question for a lot of people so don't focus on it too much or it'll mess u up.

Just for starters, start asking if any musicians would like to begin collaborating. Go to Soundcloud and find instrumentals to see how they are composed. Think along these lines.

Basically, we all begin somewhere which is in itself jumping in the deep end. So don't try and begin by jumping into the ocean. Take it one stage at a time.
