Hey

Who is your favourite lyricist and why?

I went through a few I really like from Roy Harper and Ian Anderson to Thom York, but I settled on David Bowie.

He's written some fantastic songs. His lyrics are creative and can be pretty thought provoking.

Cheers

John

It's hard to pick one favorite.

Bowie has a special place, for sure. John's reasons are my own, too; the older stuff of his I'm attached to strikes deep, but its charm (bad word, too superficial, can't find the right words) I can't wholly analyze right now. And most U2 lyrics I've heard I've appreciated. In a different realm, I love St. Thomas Aquinas' latin hymn lyrics (if those can be rightly called lyrics).

I have a lot of favorite lyricists...Tom :rolleyes.gif haha

Ken Block of Sister Hazel is one, he sings and I'm pretty sure he writes the lyrics...

Robert Hunter is up there, so is Elvis Costello & Dylan. Maybe Hunter just wins out.

Why? Heres part of 'Keys to the Rain':-

`The Prodigal Son steals off in the night,

He done it before, it turned out alright,

He took a wrong turning & wound up in a ditch,

He could've done worse though & ended up rich,

His songs were cut open and found to be clay,

The hope of the Future served up on a tray,

and who do you think youre gonna get to believe you

when you tell em you got the keys to the rain'

All the boys in SH Write. Each guy wrote two, then collab'd a bit.

Best Lyricist: Geezer Butler

I knew Nigel would go for Springsteen.

I guessed Hari would choose Zappa.

I had an idea that Evans might name Ian Dury.

I had an idea that Steve might pick young Phantom

I didn't know Waits went mad.

Is there a prize?

Unfortunately you didn't know I'd say Bowie, so no.

started losing the plot around the time of Swordfishtrombones

My feelings are similar I fear.

I mean, if I want to hear Harry Partch then I listen to Harry Partch.

However, having said that, and even sharing your likely preference for his prior, more regular crafted song-writerly songs, the changes do seem to have worked in his favour. There's a lot of folk who like wierd shit cos it's wierd, and I remember during that period when we both dug him the regional WEA rep complaining to me that Waits was "stiffing out" for the company. And pretty soon they parted ways.

I still like him having success, though.

You're not wrong, Lazz. I still have a soft spot for old Tom and used to regard him as God at one time.

I did buy Mule Variations a few years back, just to give him another chance, but it did indeed sound like variations on a mule which is not my bag any more. I fear I am becoming more conservative in my tastes which I hate the idea of really.

It has to be Eddie Vedder. But would i still feel the same if i didn't love or feel the music as i do? Lyrics put over in a particular heart felt way makes a big difference for me. Something sang genuinly and not with melodies which you can tell are just added for the sake of it. I also like a lot of the System of a Down lyrics - whether Seri wrote them or Daron i dont know - although a lot of the lyrics are crazy i think thats cool because you can use your imagination and it is pretty limitless what you can picture when listening. Political and relevant too. Again, integrity is the key i suppose.

"Hard to see, Im in a kayak made for 3, and im the forth.......so i'll abort" daveyP (although i wish it wernt!)

That's gotta be one of my worst but i cant forget it so there you go - make what youu will
