  1. Hey I guess like most instruments, to do either well is difficult. A lead vocal does tend to be under more individual scrutiny, and balancing expression with precision can be difficult although a great deal depends on the genre. Almost always a lead vocal has to have a stand-out feature that gives it a distinct and likeable character. Singing a harmony vocal can be really difficult too. Achieving a blance in tone, and volume, precision in pitch, and synchronized timing. If anything harmony vocal tend to be warm but reasonably characterless. By that I mean that they tend to be of sympathetic tones. Where harmony vocals do display more character, it is commonly a dual vocal, more than a harmony vocal. imho... : Cheers John
  2. Sorry Gerry I like Korg gear in general, but I've never used this... Cheers John
  3. Maybe they think an MP3 is a type of WMD!
  4. Hi I thought was worth drawing your attention to. Not that many Songstuff members would use these sites... http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/po...ack=1&cset=true Cheers John
  5. Hey Do you consider yourself a lead vocalist, or a harmony/backing vocalist? I wondered what makes the difference for you. Is it the range and technical skill, the tone of your voice, not wanting to be a frontman, or something else entirely? The reason ask is that I have worked with several people who consider themselves as harmony/backing vocalists, and others who see themselves as lead vocalists, but the reason is not always plain to see. Cheers John
  6. It's got knobs and buttons... what more could I ask for? Cheers John
  7. Hey Another from the Songstuff news stream... http://www.disinfo.com/site/displayarticle9760.html Cheers John
  8. Hey Finn Yeah, I couldn't agree more. I tend to think that it's up to the indie scene to create something more effective in the void left by the mainstream industry, and the web is certainly a great leveller. Exciting times to involved in music. Cheers John
  9. Hey To be honest it's all subject to change. On-line music is still a fledgling business within a fast moving technological environment. You can guarrantee that as soon as they can re-establish an effective way not to lose money through piracy, the main stream industry will be trying to get the indie genie back in the bottle. Cheers John
  10. Hey Thanks guys! I also spotted one from Roland that supported wave files. Unfortunately, pretty soon you start getting into the very small, but expensive, mini studios. I'll need to see if I can find somewhere I can try them out. Cheers John
  11. Hi Can anyone recommend a portable recorder? Nothing too expensive, but ideally something that you can just connect to a PC to just upload recordings, and that can take an external microphone. A minidisc was used as a portable recorder before, but it's a bit more of a pain to upload. If there is something better that could do this, that would be great. Cheers John

    Do you warm up?

    I couldn't agree more Finn.

    Do you warm up?

Hey Interesting range of answers. Quite a few different approaches, but mainly informal. Do any of you think it would be worth your while doing a more formal warm up? Cheers John
  14. Hey Interesting? Would you use them? http://www.billboardradiomonitor.com/radio...t_id=1000817353 Cheers John
  15. Hey Buy Wavelab. It'll do the job. Cheers John P.S. Cubase sucks the sweat off Sonar's balls. That's just a quaint way of saying, I'm not big on cubase. If you're really serious then chuck 'em both in the bin and buy Pro-Tools. Sure you'd have to sell your family, but it would be worth it!
  16. Ouch! Was that a point being made? I guess it also depends on your turnover. I'm of the same opinion as Bongstuff, but if you haven't enough income to be able to compete in the market place it's a very tempting opportunity. If you've got the cash, you're not doing yourself any favours. If you think you're any good, put your money where your Music is. Cheers John
  17. Hey Do you any of you do any warm up vocal exercises? If you do, what do you do? If not, do you have a reason? Cheers John
  18. Hey Tom I know what you mean but he is, and has always been, able to contact Songstuff to ask if we would be willing to help. If he drops me a line, I'll try and sort out a little free advertising. Cheers John
  19. Hey I found this article about the future of EMI on the Songstuff news streams. http://observer.guardian.co.uk/business/st...1411682,00.html Cheers John

  21. Hey Al To you, or the audience? Cheers John
  22. Hey What Finn says is very true. Singing with a cold can be a really bad idea. I know of a semi-professional singer who once performed when she had a cold. She thought that she had warmed up and she was drinking lots of water, and pineapple juice which is generally the best fruit juice for your vocal cords. Anyway, she lost her voice mid-way through, including her speaking voice! What's worse is that although her speaking voice gradually returned, it was not right for a long time. Her singing voice? She lost it completely for 2 years! So, be warned! Cheers John
  23. What's wrong with C++ talk? It seems perfectly logical. Now combine C++ with OOA&D and it gets real fun!
  24. Funny that. When I talk to most people their eyes glaze over, they start to drool and make a low moaning sound. I seem to elicit a similar response when I type too....
