  1. Hey Jim Dunlop. The sprung kind that you squeez like a trigger to open and release to clamp. I've been using it for years with no problems. Shifting the capo position is very quick and easy, with generally no re-tuning required. Cheers John

    How often?

    How often do you change your guitar strings, and what strings do you buy? I try to change my strings every two months. On my acoustic I use D'Addario Phosphur Bronze light gauge, and I use Dean Markley light guage on my electric guitar. Do you guys do any other regular maintenance of your guitar? Fret board oil etc?   6. Avoid parallel flat surfaces in your studio. Walls (and other surfaces) that are parallel can cause hot frequencies due to standing constructive sound waves, tuned to a frequency that is derived from the distance between the two surfaces. This is particularly true where the surfaces have low absorption. i.e. they don't absob much sound energy. Remedies are: Angle one surface so that they are no longer parallel Limit the size of flat areas that are parallel to each other Break up the surface of flat areas and make them irregular Use sound absorption materials to increase the amount of sound energy absorbed on each reflection Cheers John

Hey The warmth was often the EQ shaping caused by a combination of imperfections in the electric circuit accidentally shaping the frequency response, and Frequency response compensation meant to combat imperfections in the electric circuit. Valve equipment in particular creates this "warm" sound. Transistors also often have their own sound too. Other than editing, digital has one great big advantage. You can route cables all over the place, transmit it across the airwaves, and noise will have very little impact. That said when you do get digital crosstalk, it cannot be ignored because the audio strem is corruputed. One thing you can't do in digital is overdrive the inputs. Ok you can, but it just becomes glitches. In analog it become quite an attractive distortion sound... Cheers John

  10. Hey I work very in a very similar way. I like getting hands on, probably because I started in purely analog studios. Now I record onto a hard disk, and use lots of DSP power to provide production tools, but I still use my analog mixer. Somehow, analog has become a lesser medium, but digital and analog are distinctive and different, each with pros and cons. Now, I like the best of both worlds! Cheers John
  11. Hey Years ago music was recorded by people who could play (almost always ), then along came samplers and midi. All of a sudden those with an ear (ahem) and patience could write and record songs, and so electronic music had really arrived. You can now get primative algorhythmic song writers. Pretty soon cubase or sonar will have a composer plug in (I bet you). You'll pick the style, and the speed and the software will do everything else, including the vocals! Scary. Cheers John

I should say that currently I do my own mastering using Wavelab (can't remember the version). i find it good for standard editing, but there are some features that could be better, especially the frequency analysis. Hari, I'll check the link thanks! Prometheus, most of the EQing you describe I do at mixdown. Currently I do some EQing and some compression when I master, but I'm just not happy with the results. Probably because I don't really use a stone wall filter. I have the ratio set to 1:4 normally. I'll give it a try! (just a plug in. on recording I use a Behringer composer) Finn, roughly how much are we talking? I assume you got to sit in on the mastering sessions? Cheers John

  23. Hey Most electronic kits have a midi out, so alternatively, record the midi output from the kit, sample the drums individually, or use another sample library. This allows you to edit thr drum line easily! The drums are already recorded in an electronic kit, or simply generated from a synth, so there is little advantage in actually recording the output of the kit unless you are really into the sound of a particular kit. In that case sample it as above, unless there are samples of it already available. Cheers John
