I was using Digital Performer for the longest time. Recently I checked out the latest version of Garage Band and I was like, whoa. For being free, that program is pretty incredible. And it's so intuitive to use...Just an observation.

What are the limitations of those demo versions?

I think I'd add every freebie that Voxengo makes, until you move up to some of their better ones (I did get GlissEQ, its a must).

Some of their free stuff is just a must-have, if it weren't free I'd buy it.

Crystal is a nicer synth than most people give it credit for, and *can* work with soundfonts even, IIRC.

If you want punchier drums check out Dominion, also from Digital Fishphones:

There's probably a few others that don't come to mind, will add those later. :-[

Computer Music Magazine have a 'Special' out. iIt contains 100 FREE music making apps from sequencers to Amp sims, Synths and Drum machines. Well worth the cover price of £6.00. I bought it yesterday and will try to give some feedback on anything I use. These specials don't usually hang around too long. Might be worth a trip ti an outlet soon!

I've just been pointed to impro-visor. It's a free app much like Band in a Box apparently? Impro-Visor was developed at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California, by Prof. Bob Keller and research students, from 2005 to the present. The official home page for documentation is http://impro-visor.com/ It's free!

so i have come across a few apps for the pc that can produce drum beats but none of them r 100% free and im cheap lol any suggestions. I am getting a mac with garage band soon to help out in my music composing which comes with pre-recorded beats and rhythms for many instruments but thats not gonna be until the summer sometime and i dont want to be stuck this far from completing my music that long.

Just stumbled across this. http://www.freewarehome.com/ Lots of free apps with ratings by users.

And this! http://www.winsite.com/bin/Search?id=23500000036257 Loads of free VSTis

The winsite appears to no longer offer the vst's. Freeware home is good though.
