I'm am a musician/songwriter/and singer(out of necessity) looking for input on my work. I have been writing and recording my own stuff for 20 years...since the old four-track tape days... and am looking to promote my songs to be recorded by others more established. One problem I have is how to promote songs that are varying in styles. They don't jump from polka to punk, but some could pass for rock or country or in btn depending on the treatment.I am building a site (just learning html) but I'm not exactly sure if I'm allowed to post a link to it as the rules were unclear. I read once that you could link to YOUR OWN site, but then later that you couldn't post links without permission. Anyway, I look forward to interacting with like-minded artists.

Hi and welcome to Songstuff :)

If it is links to your own music, or a page containing your own music that is perfectly ok to link to. Similarly you can post links that are on topic as long as they genuinely contribute to a topic on these boards.

Sites that need permission are sites that sell music related gear, require you to sign up before getting anything, other communities, commercial music business sites. Sites that offer songwriting services, including writing songs for others, production houses, session services etc.

Links that are not allowed in any form are links to off topic stuff in replies, affiliate links, porn, hate, religious (unless it is your religious music), eshops (when the posting member works or earns from the shop)

Rule of thumb is, if you are a webmaster of, or an employee of, a commercial site, and you intend on posting links anywhere on teh site, contact me to review your site before posting any links. You will then be informed of any link posting restrictions that apply to you. The only exception is if the only commercial aspect of the site is selling your own music, your artist page, your artist website, in that case you can post your links in most parts of the site as long as you are on-topic in either topic creation or making a reply posting.

Does that help?

Hi Black and welcome.

All that John says as above is true but as I read your post, you are building your own personal homepage website to only add and promote your songs. If I am correct and that is all you will do with this site, then yes you can add your link.

There's a lot of helpful advice on promoting and promotion here as well as a lot of experienced people to ask for help. Take the time to search through to learn more and get involved in the community. Have fun and make some friends :)
