    temperament

My attention was drawn to the subject of 'temperament' on the fiddle-forum. I never heard of this before. It is a way of making small adjustments in intonation (fractions or 100ths of a semitone) in order to play in different keys accurately. I think it sounds absolutely bizarre. The fiddlers say for example, that all pianos sound out of tune to them because the tuning is approximated to accomodate all keys. Who knows about this weird stuff?

    Speak To Me

I can hear every word. Sounds like a Steve song too. Well done both of ya.
  4. Shout, holler & bellow all ya like. We need waking up sometimes. Welcome to SS.
  5. I agree! I wouldnt use both necks, but any instrument that plugs into itself, negating the need for an amplifier is very attractive.
  6. A former incarnation of the band I play in was called 'Fat Bloke'. This was before I got on board (Thankfully!).

    Bought a violin

John, I hope I dont fall for a classic when I get there! I am facinated by the Sub Sonic (a viola with 'octave' strings - tuned a whole octave below regular violin). Hari, Ive been after a proper spanish guitar for YEARS! Did you have to remind me!

    Bought a violin

When I last checked they were still out of stock. These are the models Hari suggested. What about the set up? Will you do that yourself? Ive been in touch with a fellow called Richard Roberts who's business is Sonic Violins. http://www.sonicviolins.co.uk/ I will try to visit him in a couple of weeks. At the mo we neither have enough time.

You lucky beggar! Im jealous. Still havnt got mine yet but am looking. What didja get? Where didja get it from?
  10. Ah The grumpy old git faction swells. Thats great! You can cover for me & Lazz when we are offline maybe? Welcome to SS. Some of us like Tom Waits a good deal too.
  11. Hi James, Are you the same feller that directed 'The Bride of Frankenstien ? Excellent soundtrack !
  12. Hiya Silkwood, See ya around (if I can find where John has hidden poemstuff!). Welcome from Portsmouth.
  13. Never entered a contest like this. What do they want? Recordings I spose? That would leave me out.

    A Prayer

Hey, never noticed this what with the board being so much bigger now. Its great. A lot to ponder in so few words.
  15. Still no violin, though I did bid for a Yamaha one on ebay, and checked out quite a few more since. I had decided to go for one of the hartley bentons Hari brought to notice, but they are all out of stock at present. Still checking ebay most days.
  16. Is this what you intended Nigel? Or should it be `welfare' ?
  17. As an exercise (not a regular method). Take an existing song, change the time signiture, substitute all the chords and change the melody flow (the phrasing is already altered with the time change) such as make it 'fall' when its ascending etc. Change the lyrics and no-one will ever be able to track it back to the original song.
  18. I missed this when it was posted. My loss. Like it!
  19. Dont make em like they used to eh? Now they just put 'Made in Tiawan'.
  20. I assume the active pickup is boosted (as in a pre-amp). Is this true?
  21. Looks nice. Seems well speced. Found a few retailers for this Harley Benton HBV400N, but no independent review so far. Its in the reckoning pot now though. Thanks for that Hari.
  22. That would be real good. Thanks John New. True, I bought a new one for about £5 when I was 17 (?), but it wouldnt stay in tune (or that was my excuse at least). I didnt keep it very long. So I am a novice. If I had the money, I might be tempted to go the easy way by buying a Jordan 6 string fretted model & tune it like a guitar, but that is sort of wimping out of the violin experience. I dont know much about electricity. I think I will need a DC one, turbo-changed hub-dynamo with ABS
  23. Hey thanks boys! What a good response. I will check out Hari's link in the morning. Nigel, I had a look at the Vioelectras. Lovely, but about £750 above what I want to spend (not more than £250 at the mo). The American Jensens & Jordans are even more pricey. Thanks again. Will keep posting.

    Give in

Much of creative writing is finding something to explore that everyone knows but hasnt spoken about. Youve done it. Great!
