  1. Are these the ones that do all the shouting & bawling?
  2. The problem of getting home seems the least of his problems. THE REAL DEAL WITH CERTAIN PEOPLE part sounds too diplomatic for an emotional statement. NAME & SHAME em!
  3. I posted a lyric today for the 'earth assignment'. A thought occurs. If this is to be an ongoing feature, wouldnt it be better to place the assignment lyrics in its own area? Say a child board within 'lyrics'? Especially since that area is so busy at present.
  4. I have posted up stuff here that I thought was 'over the line'. I remember well the almost universal disapproval I got for 'Small Titted Woman' on this board. Its one of my better songs too. However, that is nothing compared to what Randy Newman has written (Try 'Gods Song' or 'Rednecks'). It can take courage to express certain things, even if you are writting from the point of view of someone else. With music in general, I think you have to take courage and have the stomach for the occasional backlash. In summation, cross the line and damn the torpedos!
  5. I see. But this is quite new. It doesnt account for the body of work Ive seen. We rarely see too much outright criticism. We are still too polite I think. As for lurkers, I suspect we are being plundered now & again.
  6. Well said Nigel. I used to be very concerned when I was a younger writter and revealed nothing personal. The writting only began to come good when I did make it personal. There is an essential truth in all of it now I think. A few songs have been very specific. I posted up BUTCHERS HOOK here about a year ago; that even had real names and events in it. Sometimes its a borrowed experience, sometimes observational stuff. I hope I would not be too embarrassed to write about anything that wanted writting. As for Al, think yourself lucky people are listening that closely! No-one hears much detail of my stuff.
  7. assignments? What assignments?
  8. Over the last few months I have been consistently surprised at how busy the lyric area is. The only thing that amazes me more is the high quality of the work there. The quality of our member's lyrics has become exceptional I think. Is this a result of the forum itself? It must be a contributing factor at least. It seems to function partly as a workshop, with many writers having useful input. In fact it’s so busy that I can’t keep up with it. I try to look at everything, but always seem to be a few days behind.

    Guitarists....

Picasso is right. You'ld need someone with two heads to do it justice. 1000lbs of string pressure; I wouldnt want to be around when the neck(s) snap.

John, you dark horse, this is good!
  11. Good ideas. Nice analogies.
  12. Made it at last. Nice to see a new poet here. This bit about the edge seems a little odd. Though I can understand the intent. How about When you're feeling f*cked up like me And not any less or better On your way down the drain Writing your death-letter or When you're feeling f*cked up like me And not any less or better On your way over the edge Writing your death-letter
  13. Hi Espen, Glad to have you around. I see youve posted in the poems area. I will have a look later. Welcome Rudi (Portsmouth UK)
  14. Lets not pussyfoot around here. They wanna be oggled by someone they fancy, but instead of using a hook & line, they use a big net. Then complain about the catch. and oh yes, Crap poem evans.
  15. Welcome Johnny. Unusual story. Like to hear some details sometime. Theres some talented folk in here. Read you later Rudi

    Writing a song

What way do you find most productive to start writing a song? Do you start with a song concept? Do you start with lyrics? Melody? Rhythm? Any of those. If its melody it will be a single phrase. Developing this can be a trial: so many options! Rhythm will take care of itself most of the time, though may need a final arragement before its done. If its Rhythm, this can be easy, laying something on top will be chords usually. Its just another route of assembling the structure. In both cases, the lyric will occur last. If it is lyrics to kick off, I start with an invocation to the muse. If I get help, I get text down pretty quick. If not, I struggle endlessly. Either melody of rhythm can grow from there. Do you have a common way of developing your original idea? If adding something to a lyric, a phrase is helpful, as its an intuitive idea with elements of melody & time within in. These days I try to fingerpick a rhythm quite often, so melodic accompaniment is served by the chords. One common method I have for thinking of chord progression is to find a half tone interval common to all the possible chords in the pattern. This interval will feature in the final melody as well. At what point do you start recording? I dont.
  17. Hello Xiao. A welcome from the UK. Glad to have you with us.

    Dream Stone

I think MayEast is right. I hope so anyway. I have some un-serious competition with Evans. I cant get him out of my head sometimes. Looking at it now, it reads like Raymond Chandler on acid.
  19. I think Kentucky is just used as a metaphor for the subjects life up to then. Not sure about the line This lost me a bit (God, who am I to talk!), but otherwise its great stuff.
  20. Couldnt see/hear anything, and didnt want to download for security reasons. Hope I didnt miss something great. Justin King? Wasnt he in 'The Persuaders' or something?
