  1. Been wanting to do this for AGES. Over the week end, I was thinking of soprano sax v. violin. I am 85% sure I will now chase down some electric violins. Anybody know anything about these odd beasts?
  2. This is recited by Horace Rumpole on his way to work at the beginning of a ‘Rumpole of the Bailey’ episode. For best effect, try to imagine him saying it. No warmth, No cheerfulness, No healthful ease, No comfortable feel in any member, No shade, No shine, No butterflies, No bees, No fruit, No flowers, No leaves, No birds, No-vember
  3. Like it. Whimsy, Imagination, Emotional content.
  4. Dino Valenti : Rock - For all his faults, he has a delivery that cconnects. Anita O'Day : Jazz - Incredible improviser. Her 'Tea For Two' sounds like she is juggling with the fragments of the shattered song. June Tabor : Folk - A chilling sombre voice.
  5. Robert Hunter is up there, so is Elvis Costello & Dylan. Maybe Hunter just wins out. Why? Heres part of 'Keys to the Rain':- `The Prodigal Son steals off in the night, He done it before, it turned out alright, He took a wrong turning & wound up in a ditch, He could've done worse though & ended up rich, His songs were cut open and found to be clay, The hope of the Future served up on a tray, and who do you think youre gonna get to believe you when you tell em you got the keys to the rain'
  6. Well I still havnt found a half decent trad spanish (nylon strung) guitar, Ive been after one for years. Every one Ive seen in any shop is rubbish. To get anything better means a trip to Spain with £4000 in my pocket.
  7. Most of the time the public dont have a choice. For years I have bought cds from the abroad (mostly US) because those artists are unknown & unrepresented in the UK. If all you have on offer is crap, an informed choice (and taste) is of little use. The mythologised rationale behind pop innovation is that youth culture drives & determines ' a newness'. It was that way in the late 50's & through the 60's. It seemed to work at the time too, but I dont think its been that way since. Something my lady friend said made me realise that pop music is like high st. fashion. She told me what next years dress fashions were to be. 'How do you know?' I asked. It turns out that is what is appearing on the shelves & discussed in magazines. In other words, this is not a prophesy or projection, but what the manufacturers have decided its going to be. So 'innovation' (or lack of it) is the domain of the vendors themselves. Fashion is dictated. Its not driven by any sort of culture, except what some corporate draughtsman may or may not perceive. Public choice is a case in point. These pop idol type show-things give the public a chance to vote for what exactly?
  8. It may seem unlikely to many of us, but Im sure its true. Nice job mate!
  9. I suppose. I thought you were being literal before. I never concidered it that way. In context, I rarely work out stuff with the harmonic complexity that you do. Working out Bird? Think this might slow me down a tad.
  10. Yes, but we must find some inspiration somewhere.
  11. Lazz's way if VERY HARD WORK and thorough. Steve'way is hard enough, & practical. My way is lazy &... well lazy! I have hardly done it Lazz's way since my teens. I've done it Steves way in my 20's & 30's. I dont work solos out anymore. When I do hear something I like, my mind endlessly loops it over a couple of days (this is involuntary). I wake up with it still going on. Somehow it then becomes easy to play. If it is faithful, I find it bothers me, and will change it deliberately.
  12. To be frank, I cant do these things:- Pitch shift music to match your instrument (I wish I could pitch shift the band !) 16 band EQ and Low Pass (one band and a duo only) ID3 tag, OGG tag, files info displayed (no, but god knows I try at every gig) Precise time, position and sample info accurate to 1000th of a second (I play late, -behind the beat) Play MP3, OGG Vorbis and WAV files (You just hum it son....)
  13. Evans not targeted yet by the Jewish Grudge Collection Militia ? Keep yer homberg handy...
  14. Im having trouble with these diagrams. If I understand Als 1st chord shape correctly (probably not), it is comprised of E A E G# C# F# (A maj 7 + 6) I dont think I have favourite chords, but I use 9-7 (ninth minus seventh) chords both major & minor sometimes. Emin 9-7 If you havnt guessed. This is a '2nd', ie: in the scale(s) of E, its an F#. The F# being the only upper partial. Played open it is Em (2 finger version) but with F# played instead of E (D string 4th fret) Its nice to end a minor song with. This is an attempt at a diagram> ebf#gbe || | ||| |* | ||| | | ||| | * |||
  15. Chance would be a fine thing
  16. Hello Donna, Good to know that the pull of music hasnt relaxed huh? Inspiring really. See you around
  17. When Zenons Chirp There’s light drizzle There’s an arresting calm Sound carries tiredly Snails emerge Roof tiles glisten Light fractures and arcs Bikes collapse under tykes Spectacles refract droplets Cityscapes blur The greenery drinks deep Rotting wood bloats Water meadows exhale Dragonflies are dashed The air is cleansed Toads bask Grockles huddle and carp Zenons look up with half shut eyes and enjoy Rudi Z Samborski Sept 2005

    How often?

Ha! I'll try that on our bassist Stan!
  19. I have searched long and hard to find artists/music of worth. Of course they are there, but they often need hunting down ( a saucer of milk doesnt work). Individual musical journeys mostly end with the life of the individual. Most of us cant get to where they are without a similar kind of investment. Even then, its the individuality of musicians that interests me more. If JS Bach's contributions still havnt been assimilated by now, what chance does Anthony Braxton have? As for the oxymoron : , I was thinking of stuff everybody still knows but doesnt do much about. ie: cinema musicals or George Fornby etc. A thought about the last sentence. My favourite lyric of Elvis Costello is his song 'This Is Hell' from 'Brutal Youth'. There is a line that goes:- "My Favourite things are playing again & again, but its by Julie Andrews & not by John Coltrane...".
  20. First of all thankyou for all that. Second of all, most of these artists have been around for a great deal longer than 10 years, and though they may continue to innovate, they may not have innovated in outside of thier already broad sphere. And even if they have, I was speaking of popular music, or music of popular continuity, which seems to just tread water. Sorry for the confusion.
  21. Its a big old button too. Ive been looking for an ISP. One provider lists user requirements as: BT phone line & a ASDL modem. q1/ What is ASDL & USB ? q2/ Is the G5 internal modem ASDL ? (Kurty?)
  22. ok, I got it and I know nothing... Well had a quick play after I set it up. I had it freeze up after 10 minutes (is that some sort of record?). This is a G5 running Tiger. I had a quick go at GarageBand, but there are NO MANUALS! Got two tracks going with piano & guitar but didnt manage to sync em up. Pulled some pictures in by attaching my camera (didnt need the Nikon software, -iPhoto did it). Cant discern a full directory tree structure, and the mouse only has one button. I must get along to the library...
