  1. Hey I use either red or white sharkfins for strumming, but for lead guitar I use a stone. Yes a stone. The stones in question are picked up from a beach where they have been smoothed by the sea. Picking the right stones you get something that glides easily across the strings, but you won't get anything harder. Cheers John

  3. Hey I started playing at a young age. I soon realized that I was more interested in how music was put together, than becoming a virtuoso on one instrument. There are a great many musicians who are more than happy with only playing music that someone else has written. Although do enjoy it from time to time, I love the process of creating something new. Playing offers a dimension of expression through music. Writing adds an entirely new dimension to this. Add to that, I simply enjoy it! Cheers John
  4. Hey Finn Looking good dude! The text on your "Company" page doesn't read well. I think you have to clearly describe what the page is about. Cheers John
  5. Hey Finn I had a quick look but didn't spot it. I'll have more time later on... Cheers John
  6. Hey What do you think of talent competitions? Do you think they help artists? What would you recommend artists look for when they sign up? Cheers John
  7. Hari You've got the main reason. Pro Tools has dedicated hardware based on DSP technology, with dedicated hard disks for recording onto. They've been working with this architecture as long as Cubase, but while Cubase has focused on supporting industry standard sound cards Pro Tools has more or less always used dedicated hardware. In fact their first foray into the budget market was only a couple of years ago with the Digi001. Pro Tools has it's problems like anything else, but the difference is like trying to run Cubase through a Creative SB16. For me Pro Tools was too expensive. I opted for using a Creamware system (about half the price). Same idea of using dedicated hardware with a PC environment acting as a fully configurable Studio. However it is designed to work with standard sequencer programs. I use Sonar, but it works just as well with Cubase. It basically lifts a lot of the processing weight of the system main CPU, running audio processing and generation algorithms on dedicated high performance DSPs. Other companieas are begining to offer there kind of solutions. They're not cheap, but then neither is the sound. Earlier on I was kidding about Cubase. There's not much between Cubase and Sonar. They've got slightly different emphasis in their tools and envoronment. My preference is simply for more flexibility and a preference in the way data is presented. With Modern day processing power on a PC you have to go a fair amount before you encounter the problems of bandwidth. Then again I have a Creamware system. so maybe I just don't get the problem. Cheers John
  8. Hey Apparently Napster TV and Channel 4 have signed a deal... http://www.netimperative.com/2005/04/04/Channel_4_Napster Cheers John
  9. Hey Ok, almost every guitarist I know has favourite guitar strings. Is it purely down to sound? Price? Shiney packaging? Brand name? So what are your favourites and why? Me, D'Addario phosphur bronze lights for acoustic, and Dean Markley Electric light guage for my electric guitars. For me it is sound when the strings are new. I try to change them each month when I'm playing regularly. It's more noticable on the acoustic. Cheers John
  10. Hey Welcome to Songstuff! Not sure about Cubase, sorry. Maybe BS or Davlan can make a suggestion. Cheers John

    Singing Harmony

Hearing Yourself During Practice: Cup your fingers round the back of your ears with the heal of your hand coming down towards your mouth. This will help single your voice out from the other voices. Experiment with the shape to get a balance that suites you.
  12. Hey I thought I'd start a thread for tips on singing harmony vocals. Try and keep to 1 tip per post. Hopefully this will make it easier to find particular tips! Cheers John

Hey Finn I found it interesting precisely because it is a rant. That actually underlines the small mindedness of those who believe they have a right to download anything they want including my hard work. It demonstrates a mindset. I'm not against what the RIAA are doing, or at least why they are doing it. I don't always agree with the methods. It's far from the most useful article, but it does demonstrate a common viewpoint quite well, so I posted a link. That said I was tired, it was late, and what seems interesting at that point is quite different from the things I would pick otherwise. See what happens when your poor old webmaster is working too hard! Feel free to post some more selective links. Cheers John
  17. Hey BS You're right on the money in terms of direction. In terms of the pedal itself, consider adding a quieter high octave to lighten the feel. I'm going to have another good listen later on and see if I can give any more constructive suggestions. Cheers John

Hey I found this little ditty and thought it was worth highlighting: http://www.s5000.com/what_the_huck/771/ria...c_downloads.php Cheers John
  20. Hey BS Very nice. Although close, the high pitched melody sound isn't quite right. You've got a really nice drum sound. I do love brushes. What did you use for the source? You could build a really cool track from this. Doodle or not, you've created a relaxed vibe with a pretty uncomplicated mix. Cheers John
  21. Hey How do you set up a mix? Are there things that you commonly do? Is there any method to your recording and mixing, or do you just go with the flow when you record or mix? Cheers John

  23. Hey Bongstuff Now that looks ideal! I wonder what qualities it handles? I'll have a good read. Cheers John
