  1. Lot of people on here have said they are good at this...... could those people post a song??? I have sat in on numerous mastering sessions and to me this is something that is far more detail than just mixing - and something i would personally never attempt. Personally i cant remember hearing a song on songstuff that passed as a well mastered song - with the exception of some of finn's music from his first album i think. Also be interesting hearing what hardware/software is being used by the people that said they are good mastering engineers. i hear a lot of people using ozone and thinking thats well mastered.
  2. Looks like a good course. But i would not want to go into one of these without the basics under my belt. If you could sit in on a few peoples recording sessions or just see sonar/cubase etc in action and get a basic knowledge then you would probably absorb more when at this kind of course.
  3. Sonar 7 or if i feel like having a slightly different work flow reaper - which has got to be the best free or next to nothing software out there!

shes a pretty girl - it depends what for!!!
  5. http://www.waves.com/content.aspx?id=93 this software is the nuts. It puts the effect on after the recorded signal. So you can change the guitar sound after recording the part. Best bit of software i have used plus has loads of bass presets to so two in one. Just throw in a link to the best pre i have used for the money. http://www.gear4music.com/JoeMeek_ThreeQ_P...Bi0mZL_AyDfv5AR

not much. recording/recording/recording turns out my girlfriend of over 3 years has an absoulety amazing voice and we have been asked to submit an album to a few labels down in london. When they heard her voice and the album i sent you they wanted to combine the two so been writing /recording daily now to get it finished. nothing like a bit of pressure!
  7. use BFD or Exdrummer software SM57s are not very good for bass drum. Keep them for the snare or hi hats. http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~A...-II~ID~8648.asp i used something similar to this when i last did it. But the results just arent as good as software so dont record drums like that anymore. Got an electronic kit then trigger it all from BFD or Ezdrummer.
  8. i would lose the quadraverb gt. i went from that to a pod xt to guitar wavs3. So if you went to either of these you would be able to record guitar and bass pretty well. Fairly cheap drum software you could upgrade to ezdrummer. which is just awesome. And if you are getting a new mic you would then a have a pretty good setup. Once you can record well then you move on to how do i mix well and thats when you could think of reference monitors and room treatment etc
  9. funny thing is they only took 8 months to reply so strangely enough i have found somewhere now!

www.mediashack.co.uk used them many times before. print and price is good
  11. check the intonation if you are buying any acoustic. I bought a beautiful guitar but found it was impossible to record with as it was almost half a step out when you got to the 12th fret. Wasn't fixable - so had to go to guitar heaven!
  12. download the cakewalk free mp3 encoder. By defualt most prgrams export to wav which will be anything from about 30 meg up for a 3 minute song. the cakewalk encoder allows you to create mp3s of different qualities and sizes. it runs as its own stand alone program. Just choose the file choose a filename to save to. job done. http://cwenc.sourceforge.net/
  13. In my opinion you need to master the following plugs. how they work and why and when you use them. Compression - EQ - Reverb and then also about panning. Rarely when i mix do i use anything other than those. With any half decent peice of software those plugs will be included. Compression is there to keep a tracks volume level consistant and also to make the mix sound hot (loud) EQ is what will seperate the instruments so each can be heard - Probably the most important plug in my opinion. reverb to give a nice feel of a room that they have been recorded in. Panning allows you to sit instruments into the mix as they might be on stage from left to right. I was lucky enough to get talking to a guy from america who gave me online lessons about the above. each lesson cost me about 20 quid and the guy would send me a lesson sheet and then ask me to do some praticals on it. Although all the information is available online for free it can be very hard to find out whats correct and whats not. If you want me to ask this guy if he will send you some lessons i can do. I really recommend it. I learnt more in a few weeks than i had in a couple of years.
  14. Dan is still on the rig at the moment. He was caught with 10 kilos of crack cocaine up his ass trying to cross the border!
  15. a card like that would become your new soundcard. It would have inputs/outputs on it so you could discard your old card. But i personally would get one that was more of a break out box than a bunch of cables. http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FireWire1814-main.html Something like that is the same thing but better presented.
  16. having to patch in rack gear is really obselete now. If you can learn to use the tools within cubase you will end up with much better results. Why dont you record straight into your computer and by pass all the outboard gear now? you could take alink out of your chain and should make recording easier and quicker.. you can then also mix as you go as apposed to mixing just at the end.
  17. I just want as many people to hear my music as possible. The more people that hear it the more likely someone might like it. I am just trying to explore as many different avenues as possible. But because these ones have a cost for myself i wanted to see what value they actually had.
  18. Just curious if any have actually worked for people. Like have they been called by Sony etc who have liked what they have heard. They seem to have a good way of working but does it actually work or do you just pay five bucks to send a song of to noone!
  19. Hi. has anyone on the boards ever used any of the companies like taxi, caragan or the music broker. Just another avenue i am thinking of taking with my music but wanted to know if anyone else had any good/bad stories about these ventures.
  20. Hi I am after getting a couple of print runs done of my first and second album. First album i want another 200 made and the new album i want minimum of 500. 22. I am in the middle of doing some big mails out to record labels. reviewers. management. promoters and local radio stations. So far i am getting some good interest back along with some rejection letters. As yet i have sent no CD's to any publishing houses. As an artist starting out with no label or previous official releases do you think this avenue is one worth chasing up? Any ideas welcome
  23. one tip i would give for recording singers..... get them to sing using headphones but only on one side. Its gives a singer much more control of their voice to hear it seperate from the mix. I only ever use a small amount of compression whilst recording as you cant take this out afterwards. As long as you can get a good take that doesn't clip plug in compressers afterwards can sort out the levels. Also in sonar you can take multiple takes within a single track. This is how we get the best takes we can. We often run over the same part again and again.... without deleting the other takes..... You can then compare and get a good idea if you can do it better.
