HI There,

My name is Jean Sauvé and I live in Kanata, Ontario. I am a singer songwriter who started playing the accordion at the age of 8 (5 years of lessons; actually a solid foundation on a difficult instrument 😚 ) then morphed into my teens playing keyboards  for some local rock bands. My mainstay during the last 2 decades has been the acoustic guitar and original music. I write songs based on both sides of the emotional coin 🎼 I have just released my first album called: Trailheads. I invite everyone to join my website community and chat about music, inspirations, stylistic choices and life 😊

Your musical journey is truly fascinating, especially your early start with the accordion—a challenging yet rewarding instrument. The transition to keyboards for local rock bands in your teens and your dedication to the acoustic guitar for the past two decades showcase a diverse musical palette.

1. Do you sing, play an instrument or instruments?
Ja.

What instruments?
I play the electric and acoustic guitar, electric bass, drum kit, djembe/dundun, shakuhachi, dungchen, and bamboo sax (xaphoon).

When did you start playing?
Guitar when i was 7, bass when I was 10, drumkit at 14, djembe at 14, shakuhachi at 18, dungchen and xaphoon last year.

Did you teach yourself?
Mainly yes. I had lessons with a blues guitarist for 2 years, and was taught djembe by a specialist at school for 2 years. I had a wonderful shakuhachi teacher very briefly, and I attended a school for drums but didn't finish the year. Other then that, entirely self taught.

2. Are you in a band or bands?
Ja, sort of.

What is the name of the band?
I'm in two hip hop projects currently. I play acoustic guitar for one (more a duo), which is un-named and lowkey, and in an internet based trio called (working title) 'Hip Hopcrates and the Rap Magus Prism Clan'. Other then that, I am the drummer of hiatus prog death metal band Circles of Squares, and am an original member of Gareth Masons Musica Masonica improvisation collective.

What do you play?
Woops, answered above, sorry.

What other instruments are in the band?
Circles of Squares consists of two guitarists, an accordion player, keyboardist, bassist and drummer. Musica Masonica is variable and collaborative, but the main body is a loop guitarist and drummer.

Do you have a band website?
Not currently. Many are work in progress projects. Fine tuning and patience is the key today.

3. Do you write songs?
Ja.

Do you write lyrics, music or both?
Both.

Do you have a writing partner?
No.

4. Do you record your music?
When I can.

Do you use a home studio? If so what gear do you use?
Sort of. All I have right now is a Pod Studio UX1 thingy, and Pioneer 5000 headphones.

Do you use a recording studio?
When I can afford it. Which isn't often nowdays.

Do you have music available on the web? if so where?
Yes. Previous projects of mine are available on the web, but I have reservations sharing them, as I only really got out there when I went through a sort of metal phase. However my personal tastes are so much more then metal, and I dont feel the work I currently have available remotely reflects who I am. Anyone who is interested can ask.

5. What other roles do you perform in the music business?

Management? Label owner? Publishing? Promotion? Other?
I did some event organisation for a label owned my a friend of mine, called Envenomation Records.

6. Are you a tech head?
Can't say I am. I'm useless with that stuff.

7. What country do you live in?
England.

8. What are your ambitions?
I have alot of them. I'll spare you all for now.

9. Do you draw/paint/write stories/computer art/dance or other creative pursuit?
Yeah. I've been uninspired for years, but I've drawn most of my life. I love writing too, but again, lack of inspiration for a long time. School sort of forced my escapist tendency so hard that it really brought it out in me, but i'm not there any more.

What are your pastimes?
Learning. I am fascinated by absolutely everything, and dedicate my existence to self mastery, understanding, for external mastery and understanding.

10. What would you like to get out of Songstuff?
A community that I can contribute to, which can help me improve also. I've never had one that i've felt I belong with in any sense.

Whew, that was a mouthful, my apologies.

It's great to hear about the unique setups of Circles of Squares and Musica Masonica. Both sound like they have interesting and diverse musical dynamics. Looking forward to hearing more about your music!

I've never done this exercise... Til now!

1. Do you sing, play an instrument or instruments?  Not really.

What instruments?

I used to proficient on trumpet but haven't played it in about 14 years. I can play the EWI quite badly, and keyboard even worse.

When did you start playing?

Started playing the trumpet at age 11, just about 40 years ago. Never had any formal training on keyboardor EWI, but never really got to a performance level with them either (even though I may have done a couple of free improv concerts with them).

Did you teach yourself? EWI and keys yes, trumpet, no. I had private lessons from age 11-20. After that I continued on my own.

2. Are you in a band or bands? Not any more. Played and recorded in a few funk, blues, rock, pop and big bands in the 90's and early 2000's.

3. Do you write songs? Yes.

Do you write lyrics, music or both? Both, but way more experienced writing music.

Do you have a writing partner? Yes, on Songstuff actually.

4. Do you record your music? Yes

Do you use a home studio? If so what gear do you use?

Yes, I have a Cubase based MIDI set up. Lots of virtual instruments. Hardware is Akai EWI, Roland FC300 MIDI pedals, Novation SL61MKII keyboard (due for replacement), Steinberg UR22Mkii interface, Dell XPS 8950 desktop PC (i7, 12700K)

Do you use a recording studio? Not any more

Do you have music available on the web? if so where? www.alonetone.com/richiebee

5. What other roles do you perform in the music business? None any more. Used to be a music technologist at a university music school but gave it up when I felt that I could no longer rely on my hearing accuracy.

6. Are you a tech head? Used to be, but find it harder the older I get.

7. What country do you live in? Canada

8. What are your ambitions? None really. I'm 56. I hope I don't have to work beyond 65. I'm happy with how far I've got in life. I was really bad at school, never went to university, and considering that, my salary is decent and so is my job.

9. Do you draw/paint/write stories/computer art/dance or other creative pursuit? I work as a photographer, and I have done some graphic design.

What are your pastimes? I enjoy everything about coffee. I roast my own beans and have espresso daily. I love my dog (beagle), other than that, it's spend time with my wife, and work on my music.

10. What would you like to get out of Songstuff? I just want to get better at writing and producing songs, so education really. I've had a number of collaborations with SongStuff members, and all of them have been very positive experiences.
