Challenge #13 Your Lucky Number?

Recommended Posts

Hi All

This week's challenge is multi-faceted. It's one I was planning on suggesting, but now Kel has suggested it (I think it was Kel!) now would see to be a good time. It is a good songwriting exercise and one I have done a couple of times myself.

So, this week's mission, should you choose to accept it is to re-write the lyrics for an existing song selected from a short list, first come first choice, only one writer per title. If someone else is doing the one you want, well next time will serve as an incentive to reply faster ;) mwuahahahaha

In addition to re-writing the words, they will also be on a set topic.

Those who also write music I would encourage to complete the process by then writing new music to go with your new words.

The list from which you can draw:

Ramble On - Led Zeppelin

Earth Song - Michael Jackson

Love The Way You Lie - Eminem ft Rihanna

Back In Black - AC /DC

Coal Miner's Daughter - Loretta Lynn

Heart Shaped. Box - Nirvana

Heart Of Gold - Neil Young

Let Her Go - Passenger

Read All About It - Emeli Sande

Crossroads - Robert Johnson

I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow - Dick Burnett

Crazy - Patsy Cline

Topics are:

The modern world-wide recession

Love lost

Global warming and the changing weather patterns

Celebrity culture and reality TV

Stars who live their life in the press and media

Syria and their use of chemical weapons, world reaction etc

Love found on the Internet

Everyone is so busy all the time, they never stop

Spending a lifetime together

Being "the bad guy"

Travelling the world, it's such. Small place

We are who we are

If we run out of topics and songs I will add some more.

Step 1 BOOK YOUR SONG AND TOPIC BY REPLYING TO THIS POST

Step 2 Write Your Song

Easy!

PS This week's is easy as next week we get competitive as teams again, including a vote where YOU have to PITCH your group song and persuade as many people as possible to vote your song the winner. More on that next week! It'll be fun, honest! ;)

PPS Guidance will be given on pitching!

PPPS MORE ON THAT NEXT WEEK! Lol

Oh I came out with a streak of evil
While most other kids were 'fraid to tempt the devil
Called him out and beat him square
And sent him on home without his old spear
There ain't no one else close my bad ass level.

My mama slaved all day at the local wal-mart
Scrimped and saved for food upon our table
I'd shake down kids at school and make more money than I cou-ld spend
She never asked where money came from to watch our cable.

Came the day I finished school and left for college
Harvard, Yale and Notre Dam all pitched their game
But I chose UCLA so I could study on the beach
I learned more than surfing out that way!

It was black against brown and yellow against both
They were all too busy to see my coup de taa
I was left high on the ladder when the bloodshed stopped
I was in control of the west as a sophomore

Yeah it helped I came out with a streak of evil
And never was afraid to tempt the devil
It ain't easy being boss, I had to remind minions time to time
There ain't no one else close my bad ass level.

My mama doesn't work no more at Wal-mart
She runs things for me out in Hollywood
Ain't ever much gettin' by that old gal taught me all I know
She put her boy on top like a Mama should

What can I say?

At work we all have nicknames, and of course, you can't pick your own. They call be K-Bot or if feeling really friendly, The Botster, or just Botster if feeling lazy.

But it was more a matter of Abbo being non politically correct!

We also have Crackers, Evilyn, Solo and The King, and we are led by MC Hammer... his initials are MC so it was a natural choice.

Keep workin', Les. I'm sure you'll do well.

My effort, Read All About It, Global warming and weather patterns. For me, this was a hard challenge, I wanted to try it and not give up.

If you could look into a crystal ball
I'll tell you what you'd see
A world spinning out of order
The worst in history

Polar bears floating dead
That tried to swim  away
Drowned from warm conditions
With no ice, they were strayed

Chorus

You know it's a Global Warning
Open your eyes, n' look around
You don't need to be an Ostrich
Get your head out of the ground

Atlas shrugs his shoulders
Says the weather is chaotic
Floods taking over countries
With no reason or logic

Verse

:

Whirling winds of tornadoes
Tossing cities like toys around
Calamity raises it's ugly head
People weep for bodies found

Verse:

Hungry wild fires everywhere
Burning out of control
Black smoke circling the air
Leaving smoldering coal

Chorus:

You know it's Global Warning
Open your eyes, n' look around
You don't need to be an Ostrich
Get your head out of the ground

Here is my version on the song using the topic I chose.

Heart Shaped. Box - Nirvana

Topic

Everyone is so busy all the time, they never stop

You Don’t Have Time For me

You have time for all the rest you don’t have time for me

Our lives are slipping through our fingers you’re to blind to see

The silence that’s between us makes every-thing so clear

I hear the trees that fall though I am nowhere near

Don’t!

Go!

We need to sort this out

Ba..be you are driving us apart

Slow!

Down!

You’re in overdrive

Take a st…ep back to reset your life

Last!

Chance!

Our time is almost up

Only you can sa…a...ve us now

Save us now

Tomorrows a new horizon we need to start again

Knock these monkeys off our back there driving me insane

The tiny pieces of our lives mean nothing if we’re on our own

You’re completely surrounded by them yet you stand alone

Don’t!

Go!

We need to sort this out

Ba..be you are driving us apart

Slow!

Down!

You’re in overdrive

Take a st…ep back to reset your life

Last!

Chance!

Our time is almost up

Only you can sa…a...ve us now

Save us now

First Les, let me say I like your lyrics a lot better than Nirvana's. I thought the original lyrics were grotesque. Yours were very well written and imaginative without sensationalism. I love it---tttt!

Goldy, Lots of energy in this.

My favorite bit is this

Tornados droping down like bombs

Tossing cities like toys around

Calamity raises it's ugly head

Sorrow fills the air with sound

I tried to sing along to the whole song but way out of my depth, but this section in my head sounds spot on.

Good job girl.

Les

Thanks Les, I have no clue about melody, so I try to write it flowing the best I can. I'm sure it needs tweaking for music. But the idea is there.

I love this Kel, it's hilarious, reminds me of one of Weird Al's parodies.

Very cleverly written song!

Goldy

That's interesting, it wasn't meant to be humourous, just about a crime lord's rise to notoriety!

Oh well, humour is where you find it.

Cheers for the feedback,

Kel

You know your right Kel, now that I read again. I guess I'm tired, and thought some of the verses about Wal-mart and shaking kids down to pay for the cable were humorous. My apologies, now I see your sinister theme throughout the song. Wickedly funny? Just kidding. Great write, like all of your songs.
