  1. I'm going to have to disagree with you. Some of my biggest breakthroughs playing live have been when I've been thinking of whats coming up in a few bars, it definitely relies on muscle memory to an extent, but if you're not thinking about what you're playing you're just going to rehash the same old licks you've been playing. in situations like these you usually aren't responding very well to what the rest of the band is playing. To say theory has NO good place is like saying grammar has NO good place in giving a speech.
  2. This x100000! I think a lot of people spend their time ignoring rhythm for to long. Learning melody and harmony is great, but without rhythm you'll still sound awful.
  3. Just saw on one of the NAMM threads at HCFX that theres some new product coming out that you can put on your fingers... I know people have used superglue in the past to fake calluses, but apparently this product does a waaaay better job... I'll try and find the link and edit it here if I can.
  4. Everybody can learn how to sing! You're never to old to learn more! I know people who have retired and started voice lessons as a hobby. You will get out of your learning what you put into it, wether it's through a teacher or self directed. all I will say is that finding a teacher to guide your learning is extremely beneficial, they'll be listening for things that you won't notice. One lesson every month or even two months is better than no lessons at all! (for most people, some people are reallly great self directed learners...)
  5. step one: play random stuff on guitar step two: squak over it step three: add words to squaking step four: SONG I have the best 4 step process
  6. I had an early start with piano, (started on my 4th birthday) I think if I hadn't of started that early I never would have progressed very far. What does a regular day practise routine look like on a z?
  7. I think your probably right about this! I've been practising a bit with a guy in his 30's. Monster guitar player! I'm going to try and line up a mini tour with him before I start work for the summer. Been picking up my old trumpet recently too, I'm getting pretty bored with piano so I'm staying away from it for a while. Thinking about getting an accordion or maybe a banjo, not sure yet though.
  8. It's all useful, I mean, I already know my views on theory and i think I'm pretty set in them. But on the other hand this is a discussion topic i tend to really enjoy, and this is probably the first time I've gotten to see it discussed intelligently. It usually turns into people calling each other idiots after the two main POV's have been made. Can make for entertaining reading, but not usually insightful information. This is exactly the type of discussion I was hoping for
  9. I'm hesitant to start this thread here, because everywhere else that I see it it tends to spiral downward very quickly. A friend asked me to write an article about this for his blog, and I saw a similar thread on reddit so I've been thinking about this a lot. What, as guitar players, do you think about music theory? How many of you feel it "limits" your playing, or that it's useless and understanding it better does nothing to make you play guitar better? Personally, I think of theory as a language, my biggest use of theory is communicating to other musicians what I'm doing or what I want them to do. Also for practise, working out new voicings, figuring out how to get the music from my head and out from my amp. As a guitar player who was working on harmony before ever touching a guitar, it really baffles me not only how many guitarists won't learn theory, but how many guitarists go out of their way to complain about it making music mechanical. Discuss *edit* I <3 Theory
  10. I still forget stuff all the time. I usually just try not to make a big deal out of it and get through the song, heck, I've accidentally sang the first verse 3 times before and no one seemed to notice
  11. I just realized that I haven't posted this here (or if I did, I can't find it)! Last summer I did a recording session in a church with an amazing guitarist backing me up and an awesome engineer running the session. you can download it for free here: http://laynegreene.bandcamp.com/album/live
  12. Definitely time for a break It was a blast though!! I learned a lot about comping doing these covers. And I think my vocal performance improved a lot. I'm hoping to talk to the local theatre directer and see if he'll let some coffee house type shows happen in the green room this semester. I miss playing Thanks for sticking with this thread mike, I really appreciate it and happy new year!! And thanks Tom for jumping in!
  13. Aside from music I'm also fairly active as an actor.
  14. This is it! My last cover for this project. It's been a blast. Did this song as an xmas present for my dad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8E2qhlQfjs
  15. Another great cover! nice one Tom. Here's mine for this week. Not terribly happy with it, but don't have time to fix it/record something else. https://soundcloud.com/laynegreene/12-the-storm-its-coming-glen Video coming when I get some time to work on it...
  16. I like your taste in guitars Parker's look like such cool guitars, they're one of those brands where whenever I see a vid of someone playing one, before they even start I already think they probably know what they're doing and I'm in for some sweet tunes. Can't find a single decent demo of it, but I've been wanting one of the Holdsworth signature models for a few years now Also wouldn't mind if a Duesenberg came my way
  17. Thanks Mike The tone for the solo is a little trashier than I expected, but I'm starting to almost like it
  18. This weeks instalment, video to follow this evening I hope..
  19. How did you get started with the ztar tappermike? It just seems like an odd instrument to just decide to pick up, although I must say I've been watching more vids on youtube and I'm quite intrigued.
  20. For my first 2 years playing I was doing anywhere from 1-6 hours a day of concentrated practise. then I sort of plateaued and was down to about 1 hour a day, now I'm around half an hour of practise, but that half hour is usually fairly productive.
