  1. I try and put in an hour a day when I can. First 15-20 minutes is usually working out voicings and running over some scales. Recently I've been trying to work more on arpeggios though and connecting ideas over different changes. After that (I guess it's mostly for warmup...) I'll work on parts for tunes or try some new ideas in context. and sometimes I just play really badly and loudly just for fun.. why not eh?
  2. Napkin plans are fantastic! especially just as a way to keep yourself on track! just remember to keep you goals as realistic as possible!
  3. I think this'll be an interesting project, hopefully more people than just the two of us will jump on board!
  4. Taking part in the Songstuff Music Promo Workgroup... This should be fun! woot! I guess a little background for fun. I'm entering my last year of a business degree next fall, and while I've learned a lot there's a bit of a gap between theory, strategies and practical application of those ideas. I've been focusing my studies towards management, marketing, and entrepreneurial development classes with the hopes of ending up self employed in either music or film. I started out as a music major my first year, but the switch to business has definitely been eye opening and to be fair, will probably prove more useful for my purposes in the long run. As John has already pointed out having a plan and writing it down is so important. Even just a "napkin plan" for your own personal reference will prove far more useful and productive than keeping it in your head. I try and look at a marketing plan as a contract with myself. If I've written it down, I'm committing to it and I need to do my best to make it happen. It's always subject to revision, but hopefully the first draft will be clear enough to get you on the right track. Hopefully these will get more insightful in the future.. Layne
  5. Hey all, I work at a venue as a sound tech over the summer, they let me use the space for a day when no one was around. Here's a vid we did, got 3 more on the way in the next little bit!
  6. I think one important thing to keep in mind is that vibrato is a natural thing, if you're forcing it at all, then you're probably not doing it quite right. I was always taught that if you're singing with good technique there will be a hint of vibrato. good luck!
  7. I agree David, very informative post Heath!
  8. My girlfriend's uncle plays them almost exclusively, he has 4 or 5 of them I think. Fantastic guitars! Happy NGD!
  9. Those tele's are beautiful telebob! what kind of finish is the one on the right? It looks slightly metallic to my eyes.
  10. My girlfriend sent me this last Friday. I laughed at first, thought it was kind of silly, but goddamn it's catchy.
  11. I think with personal discovery you definitely get a fuller understanding of the concepts. Nothing's more satisfying than figuring something out yourself and really knowing it as fully as possible
  12. Thanks for the bump just posted this vid to youtube! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5m92N9ailRQ
  13. Thank you! The guy I got to do all the guitar work is a phenomenal jazzer. We're both fairly big Metheny fans (although he sounds a lot more like Pat than I ever will). I'm really into Muthspiel recently, and lots of Bill Evans on my musical diet. So many voicings!! I wrote working man for my Grandfather while he was in the late stages of Alzheimers. I almost didn't put it on the EP because I wanted it to be purrrrrrfect, but I decided it was as close as it was going to get outside of a pro studio. It actually means a lot to me that you picked that one out Thanks for listening, glad you enjoyed it!
  14. As some of you may know I released an EP at the start of the month. If you have a minute please check it out! And if you like it, I have 80 free download codes to give away... message me, and I'll send you one. All I ask in exchange is that you share it somewhere on the big wide interwebz if you can http://laynegreene.bandcamp.com/album/break
  15. Decided to go check for you, and yes, yes it is.
  16. I think there's definitely situations where a stage name is beneficial. I do some acting as well as music, and I know a lot of guys who use stage names for privacy reasons. George Canyon is from the town I grew up in, his given name was Fred Lays, changing his name obviously helped solidify his career and his place in country music. I have no ideas for you! But Topaz is a pretty cool given name, I'd roll with it personally!
  17. I know diddly squat about drumming, but I love me some satch covers! Nicely done!
  18. haha What does graphite sound like? I've always wondered what people thought of them, but haven't ever gotten the chance to ask someone who owns one!
  19. No worries good sir! I won't bother rehashing the grammar thing, just woke up, it makes sense in my head for the way I'm trying to put it, but it's early and I'll probably just cloud the analogy more. The internet is notoriously bad for trying to convey meaning It's hard to get people's intent from a wall of text, and people tend to get defensive when they're being argued with. s'all good here
  20. This is why this is a touchy topic! and why I was hesitant to post it to begin with. Even after rereading my post I don't see anything particularly insulting, and I'm very sorry if you took it that way. Most of the musicians I know are improvisers, perhaps this is where our POV's are conflicting. I'm NOT saying theory is the end all be all, but that it has uses going beyond notation and composition. There's so many different ways of thinking about your playing, I'm not even saying that you have to be consciously thinking about how the notes relate to each other from chord to chord. Some of the best players I know are guys who do think about what they're playing all the time. Some of these guys tour nationally and internationally, but this thread isn;t about who we know and what their opinions are, it's about how we all feel individually. I DO respect your right to say theory isn't your thing, I just get a lil miffed when people say it's a hindrance in performance settings. Also, not trying to be a "snob", some of my best friends can't spell out the notes in a C major chord, and they're some of the players I respect the most. Not complaining here, just find this topic highly interesting ad I don't get why so many people are completely against theory. Again, wasn't trying to be insulting, sorry if you took it that way!
