  • Songstuff Writer and Artist Development Challenges

    By john

Independent writers and artists face several large disadvantages when they are compared to signed, mainstream writers and artists.  Disadvantages that add up to making it a competition that indies can’t win. Hell they can’t even compete.   Lack of budget and poor contacts are fairly obvious disadvantages. Lack of experience and a lack of knowledge restricts songwriters and artists alike. Lack of an overall strategy, and a limited set of incomplete tactics, makes for a critical problem

Chapter 5 Recording Techniques I've Used.

Here are some of the recording techniques and machines I've used up to the present: These are the two units I used for sound on sound-1977-1979: The cassette (CTF-1000) and the reel to reel (RT-707), both Pioneer. The real pain in the butt was having to switch the RCA cords back & forth between input & output. A song that was concieved in this "era" that I recently recorded with my current setup is ”With You”written in April of 1978. In 1984 I entered multitrack wi

Chapter 4 A "little" Les Paul

A bit of history, for those who don't know: Les Paul wasn't just some dumb country hick who sang songs with Mary Ford. He was a super genius who, as anybody in the record industry will tell ya, revolutionalized recording techniques. He invented a guitar that is used widely in every musical genre from Rock to Jazz, named it after himself and sold the design to Gibson. He invented the harmonica holder that Bob Dylan made famous. He also invented a very insignificant little techniq

Chapter 3 Songwriter (or "so That's What That Name In Parenthesis Is On A Record Label!)

I should mention my best friend, Mark. He went to college too. Took music ed AND GOT HIS DEGREE!! He stuck it out. Is he a teacher now? No, but at least he has the credentials. He kept me company in my year of torture at Penn State (State Penn?) Anyway. I joined the work force as a factory worker, first in a steel mill, then in a bakery. The music bug didn't let go, though. In the year that I studied and practiced my cojonies(sp) off, I had to study piano and music theory &

Chapter 2 An Idiot's Guide To Dropping Out Of College

OK, Time to move on to better places in my musical diary. By the time I was in high school I knew the music bug had terminally infected the very depths of my soul. OK, man, What are you gonna do about it. Well, I did alot of goofy things like play my sax along with records (that was more fun than "practicing"), but that got me nowhere. I pondered a performance degree from a place like Julliard or Berkley, but that also wasn't to be either, so the only thing left for any kind of musical care

Chapter 1 Born A Musical Creature

I was born July 8, 1955. I don't remember at what moment I became aware of how much I loved music. I guess nobody really does. All I remember is having my own record player at a very young age. All kinds of records too. Not just the "hits" of that time. In addition to records by The Diamonds, Drifters, Coasters, Buddy Holly, Connie Francis, Brenda Lee, Bobby Rydell and Ritchie Valens, there were jazz records, adult contemporary records (back in those days that kind of music shared the cha

The Naked Song

Getting happy with this one. It's basically a bass riff. Before I finished writing the song, it was mainly on one string, either low E or A. The whole thing. One day I said I just gotta finish this. What it lacked was a chorus and I was fine with that also being a bassline. But it's chords instead. Same ol chords, yet they fit just right. There's chords also on the bridge. The bridge lyric refers to M. & m. coming home one day with lice, right when I was feverishly trying to r

"in" Not "to"

4 yr old D. 5 yr old G. ~ and myself were driving this pristine day to pick up one of their flu-ish siblings, from school. G. was popping - her little world is opening up: "I'm happy, I like this day! I like the world, I belong to it!" Sho nuff! That's the way it should be! We 3 were whistling dixie, grand ol day. We pull into the school lot and approach the doors. They are all locked. "Hmmm, why're they locked?" we all wonder. I begin banging on the doors, having spied an

My Ideas......

I love how people dismiss my ideas, then later they use them as if it was their own. this is all I have to say to them ....WHATEVER! The most recent case. A poetry site I used to be active at. I suggested that they have something when you sign in that tells you which poems have new comments. At the time, you would see a list of ever poem you had and beside it where links with a number, example (3) would mean you had 3 comments if you had 1 new comment on that poem it would say (3)(1). Now, t

A Week To Forget

Well, I cant say I would be upset if I this week was completely erased from my memory. I kept hoping it would look up, but the change of tides never did come. I really hoped it would get better tonight when I got home from work, but nothing has changed, well other than another day has gone by. I know, I tell other people to look on the bright side, but im not seeing any light right now. Ive had to go all week wondering if my man was mad at me or if he was hurt or something. I was physically sic

Thursday, The Final Evening Of May 07

Broke my naffing thumbnail! I can just about cope with fingernail loss but the thumb is hurting when I pick. Gave up practice after 45 minutes due to throbbing thumb. Nails are a perishing nuisance (literally perishing). Powered up the Mac to download Yahoo Messenger. Installed it and placed it on the desktop. Then noticed it had 2 icons in the dock. I couldn’t remove either of them. Got out the manual, did what the manual said and it seemed to work for about 5 seconds. Then it reappeared i

Flamingo & Strapless Tops

The spanish guitar has pretty much taken over all of my practice time. Although it’s a sod to play I am gradually finding it easier. I am trotting out a piece I began in my 20’s. I called it Flamingo. Like all my own compositions, it evolves. Bits got forgotten and other bits got tacked on later. I have the bare bones of Flamingo resurrected now and can play most of it. More importantly I have added some more and it has taken on a life of its own once more. It’s now as long as it ever was and st

Memorial Day 2007 Ed.

Each year I attend Memorial Day Services in my home town. This year, thanks to my new found hobby of photography, I thought I'd bring it to you. It's hard for me to understand what these people gave in order for me to live the life I do. That being said, I grabbed my camera and went to the cemetary with one thing in mind; Try to show what Memorial Day is all about. I hope I caught at least a small part of the feeling. Go here. Memorial Day Thanks, T P.S. Take note of something I

Stanley The Kitten Too

Of course he is a cute little feller. When I knocked on the window he fled behind an armchair. When I entered the room I saw a small wide-eyed face peeking out from behind it. I sat still in another chair & within a minute he was walking all over me, sniffing my fingers, chewing my work-badge. Y'know, kitten stuff. He is a fluffy tabby. He can sit in the palm of your hand. I prefer dogs myself, but there is something quite endearing about Stanley. This puts me in mind of my

Can I Have Some Permission? To Breathe? Please?

blah blah blah *Continually passed over is the perrenial "permission" (cough hack) declared long ago in the 16th century, as noted in the document Quo Primum. *And also the lifting of the declaration of excommunication. The SSPX is part of the Church. Thank you A. Lefbrve for keeping Tradition alive... *Blah blah blah. The French Bishops have persecuted A. Lefebvre for almost 40 years, Michael Davies' trilogy having damningly documented the first

Come Holy Ghost

I stumbled into the choir loft in the midst of the Vidi Aquam; a bright teenage girl let me look on her music. It'd been too long since last sang w/ em. Dr. K. was wearing black and directed us, sang and played organ all at once, mightily recovering from a few blunders. I'd forgotten what a feat it is to keep track of all the music; today there were 5 books; you just keep up and flip around best you can. Introit propers for Pentecost - Bam! Kyrie from St. John Bapists Mass - Bam! Gradu

Getting In The Flow

Hey For ages I neglected my guitar. It's a sad story. Well not really. I only picked up my guitar for working through chords for a song I was writing, but very little just to play the guitar. Lately I've been doing a lot more playing the guitar for the guitar's sake. If you know what I mean. I was amazed at just how much the fluidity of my playing had been affected. I played "little Wing" a few weeks ago on my acoustic and was really pleased that I managed to remember it, but on l

Stanley The Kitten

I am to visit my son Ben this evening. He has a new kitten. The kitten’s name is Stanley. Apparently Stanley likes to chew cables & wire. This could be a problem. Cats seem to delight in non-cooperation, except for lions. Other creatures benefit from mutual cooperation, ants, wolves, herring, porpoises, bees, sheep. Why couldn’t he have adopted one of those? A budgerigar would have been easier. After all birds inspired the likes of Wilbur & Orville Wright. The chord of an airc
