Songstuff Writer and Artist Development Challenges

    By john

Independent writers and artists face several large disadvantages when they are compared to signed, mainstream writers and artists.  Disadvantages that add up to making it a competition that indies can’t win. Hell they can’t even compete.   Lack of budget and poor contacts are fairly obvious disadvantages. Lack of experience and a lack of knowledge restricts songwriters and artists alike. Lack of an overall strategy, and a limited set of incomplete tactics, makes for a critical problem

In My Own Skin.

There was a time in my life when the thought of leaving my own house filled me with terror. In even darker times I even began believing that an evil force had taken possession of my mind. If there is a precipice between sanity and insanity I was balanced on the very edge of it and peered briefly down into “madness”. It all began when I was around fifteen and began dabbling with drugs. Nothing too heavy, a little bit of pot here and there, alcohol, and pain pills. I had been suff

Three Gigs!

THREE GIGS! Here they are, in chronological order: (1) FRIDAY, 25 APRIL at Johnny B.’s in Medford (downtown, at 35 S. Bartlett), starting at 9:30 p.m. I’ll be playing with Screamin’ Gulch, and we’ll be followed by the bluegrass band The Mighty Lonesomes. (2) SATURDAY, 26 APRIL with Darrin Wayne at the Triple Tree Restaurant in Sams Valley (on Highway 234 at the blinking light), starting at 5 p.m. We’ll try to rope a bunch of other Southern Oregon Songwriters in, too. (3) TUESDA

Wild Goose Gig 4/29...

For a change, mostly good news. The music business is picking up. THE WILD GOOSE GIG is going to be TUESDAY, 29 APRIL, 8 to 11 p.m. I’ve tapped Darrin Wayne to play harmonica, and want to tap James Maille for lead guitar, Jack Fischer for bass, and Dan Doshier for mandolin, if they’re willing. Soon as the band’s firmed up, I’ll do a poster. And notify the joelist. Darrin and I also may be playing the Three Trees Lounge in Sams Valley this Saturday, 4/12. Just the two of us, but it

The Recording Session...

Didn’t have Screamin’ Gulch for practice Wednesday night, but did have Wayne, and his recording equipment, and for part of the evening, had Mike the standup bass player, too. So we recorded a pile of songs The Termite Song (When I Jump Off the Cliff) I’ll Think of You Free-Range Person Armadillo on the Interstate Naked Space Hamsters in Love No Good Songs About the War Milepost 43 Dirty Deeds We Done to Sheep And now it’s in Wayne’s court. I encouraged him to not leave

Gogol Bordello 01/04/2008

Gogol Bordello 01/04/2008 The sentence "Epic Gypsy-Punk" could be used to fully describe the gig. However, I get the feeling you'd like a bit more than that... The first thing I noticed when I arrived at the Carling Academy was how happy and energetic the crowd was, there were 'pratice' pits going on before the bands got going! The support act was called 'Skindred', and are a 'ragga-rock' group from Newport. If you're as clueless to that genre as me, I guess I could bets describe the s

Recording Testament

My next album - a progressive rock concept album now renamed to Testament - is in the recording phase now. Currently I am working on assembling the classical parts and also preparing for the drum parts to be recorded. I am also planning how everything should flow together and working on melody and lyric details. It is really coming together well and I think the end result is gonna be pretty cool. I am also working on this website - actually splitting it up in a Finn Arild Music and then a Finn

Dodgy 28/03/08

Dodgy 28/03/08 Pictures of this gig are available here. First off the venue - the Shepherds Bush Empire is really pretty! YAY! I think it's an old theatre, and I really enjoyed looking at all the pretty decoration in the pre-performance lull... I always appreciate a nice venue, and this was no disappointment, I look forward to going to see another band there sometime. The first act caught everyone by surprise, as the singer/songwriter (whose name I didn't catch) half snuck on sta

Performing (and Updates)...

THE JOE LIST: First junkmail went out Thursday. Only 7 e-mails returned as bad edresses, and only 2 people have asked thus far to be taken off the list. Thanks to all (there were a bunch of you) who wished me luck. THE JOE GIGS: Only one on the horizon is the unplugged gig with fellow writer Scott Garriott at the Ashland St. Beanery in Ashland, SATURDAY 5 APRIL, 7 to 9 p.m. Same night as a Southern Oregon Songwriters showcase, so I’ll have to make sure to be on early at the showcase.

The Subways 27/03/08

The Subways 27/03/08 This gig was something of a surprise extra for me, as I didn't find out about it until a couple of weeks prior to it, and didn't know I could make it until 4 days before it. I ended up being late (again ) but it didn't matter as the support act didn't start until about 9, so turning up at 8:45 was actually a good thing! The gig was in The Point again, and hopefully when I upload the pics you'll be able to seem some of the churchy goodness. The support act were pret

The E-mail List Begins...

HERE WE GO… Signed up for gmail (owned by Google). It appears it will do the mailing list thing (Yahoo will not). Right now, there’s one big list, with over 130 people on it (I’ll add more), and I don’t know how best to break it down. I could have (1) one list for people who know me through music (like SOSA members), and (2) one for people who do not—or I could separate ‘em geographically (southern Oregon/Other or even Northwest/Other), or maybe just between (1) people who would go to li

Hayseed Dixie 19/03/08

Hayseed Dixie 19/03/08 Ok, I might have to mention the venue this time around... The Point is an old church down by Cardiff bay which has been converted to house a stage and bar, and they seem to do pretty well on the band front: So far I've seen the Bluetones and Whole Lotta Led, and now Hayseed Dixie of course... And they have The Subways coming up on Thursday (gig report either that night or the next day, depending on whether my girlfriends stays that night...). And the sound is always g

Unemployed...

Friday at 5 p.m. I officially joined the ranks of the unemployed. I’m still in southern Oregon; got a house to clean, and furniture and books to dispose of, and some business to tie up—and I’d still like to find a job in this area, even though they are hard to come by. This is a very exciting place to live. Still haven’t decided whether to sue my former employers, though two different attorneys have advised I do have a case. (That last is for the benefit of the City Councilperson who said he

Spinlords Of Spintania 25/02/08

Spinlords of Spintania 25/02/08 First of, sorry - I got my gigs in the wrong order! I forgot that Spinlords were in February... Typical... Nevermind, Correct order should be easy in future as I will (theoretically) be writing them up before the next one happens... Oh and for those that haven't heard of the Spinlords (I would guess most of you ,as they're a North Devon band that haven't really gigged away from home yet), check out their myspace - make sure you finish a song as they like to g

Streetlight Manifesto (and Reel Big Fish) 28/02/08

Streetlight Manifesto (and Reel Big Fish) 28/02/08 So, after waiting for about 2 years for the Ska-Punk legends to return to Blighty for a tour I could go to I finally find them in the (insert disgusted tone) SUPPORT slot for Reel Big Fish... RBF are great, don't get me wrong, I saw them in Exeter a couple of years ago and had an awesome time, but Streetlight Manifesto are a whole other level, they actually have something to say (other than 'I want you girlfriend to be my girlfriend etc). Kula Shaker, Anson Rooms, Bristol 05/02/08

Ok, for my first gig review post I'm not going to start at the beginning, I can't remember that far back! So instead I'm going to start with my first gig of 2008... Kula Shaker, 05/02/2008 I suppose I should point out (so you see any possible bias) that I've been a big fan of Kula Shaker for about 10 years now, and have been dying to see them ever since they reformed in 2006... That said I've been to enough gigs to know when even a much loved band is having an off night! The gig s

Yes, There Will Be A St. Leif's Eve Concert...

A week in which I virtually did not play music? Feels really odd… Missed last Tuesday (Chris Parreira’s open mike in Ashland), last Friday (with the Friday Night Group in Garibaldi), and last Sunday (open mike at the Wild Goose), mostly because of scheduling conflicts. Practice Wednesday night with Screamin’ Gulch was phenomenal; we had an audience (of 5) who did nothing but listen raptly for the whole two hours we played. The band is tight, and impressive—even with me as their lead guit

A Day In The Life

A Day in the Life 6.00am: Rise with the untitled tune in D minor running through head. Briefly wonder why bathroom mirror light is on. Recall that the toothbrush is plugged in there because I left shaving adaptor at beloveds. Shave. Brush teeth while loading carrots into briefcase. Climb onto scales. Only ½ lb lost this week. Dress & run mental checklist before leaving house. Phone, wallet, ID badge, briefcase, keys. 6.30am: It’s still dark. Leave house, get car out of gara

A Lazy Day

Currently listening to : HIM - You Are The One Curent Mood: Tired Time : 2:12am Right seeing as this is my first blog then I thought I should start by saying how very well I was welcomed to this site and after seeing the site I am very happy to have somewhere to post my work and very happy for people taking the time to criticise and merit my work. I just got home from work, I am training to be a chef and im very interested in cooking and food. I started at 10am this morn

Getting Ready To Leave...

Well, I lost my day job. It’s tempting to consider just going out and being an unemployed musician—but I’m not well-known enough, and haven’t been making money at it, just having fun. Last time I had a shot at supporting myself as a musician was when I played with The Dodson Drifters—and that was 25 years ago, and even then I had a day job. Not having a job, of course, means having to move—southern Oregon’s too expensive a place to live without an income. The monthly bills alone are two t

Gigs, Album & Recording...

OUT OF TOWN for five days this week, and four next week. There will at least be music. I’ll get to play this Thursday night with “The Risk-Takers,” the in-house band from City-County Insurance Services that performed at the annual conference last year, and both this Friday and next I get to sit in with the Friday Night Group. Sundays is still the Wild Goose in Ashland, and Tuesdays is Chris Parreira’s open mike, also in Ashland. I have not mentioned in this blog the political maneuvering

More Updates...

A FEW UPDATES: I did attend the Song Contest at the wild Goose, but didn’t win—Gene Burnett took first place, and Frankie Hernandez second, and I can’t argue with the decision: both guys are awful good at what they do. There were additionally at least two more writers I would have rated higher’n me if I were doing the judging. Nonetheless, George Clark (on harmonica) and I did the crowd a good job with “Armadillo on the Interstate” and “Bluebird on My Windshield.” The audience were clapping

About Fans...

When the band, Oh, Hush! wanted a new logo (the old one was reminiscent of an early ‘60s Frigidaire ad), they went to their fans. They posted a call on their MySpace blog, announcing a two-week deadline. After two days, they had five pages of responses, that included a lot of logo entries. Now, Oh, Hush! caters to a younger crowd, judging from the photos of some of the fans, and not all of them are graphic designers or graphic design students. A lot of the logo suggestions weren’t very g
