  1. So I'm a "Senior Member" of Songstuff now…It's been a great year for sure

  2. Cool topic. When I post stuff up, I'm really hoping for honest feedback on everything (including the final mix). I'm always trying to improve as a musician/songwriter, but producing is still a fairly new language to me. I'm making a record and producing it, so this forum is a great place to get some "fresh ears". Plus, there are some serious badass musicians here that I just like to listen to.
  3. Hi Will, Interesting topic. I've run into this problem before, and ive tried a few different things. Sometimes, I'll take a verse from another song that I have in progress and fit that verse into a different song. You'll have to re-write a few things to make it fit, but it can help. Also, I'll often times just sit and play the verse progression on guitar and sings random words to the melody. If I happen to sing something that I think is worth keeping, then I'll build the verse off of that. That's usually how most of my stuff gets written in the first place, but I know a lot of people hate writing like that. Anyway, maybe that helps you out a bit. Just keep working at it, and best of luck! -Michael
  4. Gonna pick up the electric for awhile and make some rock tunes

  5. This lyric from U2 always stood out to me. It's from their song 'Cedars of Lebanon" "Choose your enemies carefully 'cos they will define you Make them interesting 'cos in some ways they will mind you They're not there in the beginning but when your story ends Gonna last with you longer than your friends"
  6. Feeling stale…gonna record some live tracks today

  7. ^ I agree with the Milk Carton Kids, they're great. Not necessarily new, but Jason Isbell's album "Southeastern" is one of the best albums from last year. Also, Ive been listening to a guy named David Ramirez a lot lately. I'll be sure to check out some of these other artists
  8. Hey Mahesh, Mixing a single track with guitar/vocal is more difficult than mixing separate tracks...but it can certainly be done. Anyway you could post a snippet of the recording? I think that would help us narrow down what you might want to work on with the mix.
  9. I mix in Logic Pro 9 and I only use 1 3rd party plug-in, which is a De-esser (Logic's De-esser isn't that great). So far, I've found that Logic has great plugins included and I haven't had too many issues. I firmly believe that plugins are great when used correctly, but don't expect them to change a bad recording into a good one.
  10. I'm streaming my album on my Soundcloud for a few days. Check it out if you get a chance

    MonoMirror

    Thats a really cool pic
  12. Hopefully, fame isn't your #1 priority (it's a long shot) Being the best musician that you can possibly be should be your focus. Being a great musician and being famous don't always go hand-in-hand. It's hard to deny great sounding music, no matter what the genre is. So, make great music and get as many people as you can to listen to it. It's possible to do this without a major record label. A lot of musicians are bypassing the major label route because music is so easy to access now with social media. Ask yourself this: What sets you apart from every other talented musician out there right now? If you have a good answer, then use that to your advantage.

From the album: I have no clue what I'm doing

I thought this was a pretty cool pic

    My studio buddy

From the album: I have no clue what I'm doing

My backup vocalist, Bo. He snores during most of my vocal takes...
  15. Anybody got any new music that I should check out?

  16. I have 6 guitars…. acquired over a very long span of time. Big Baby Taylor acoustic - for studio recording Martin Custom X series acoustic - for live performances/studio Dean Performer - had it for years, can't bring myself to part with it since I've done so much work on it 2 Fender Strats and 1 Squire Bronco bass :-)
  17. I'm officially finished writing my 1st solo album. Even if no one hears it, I'm proud that I did it.

    1. Stova007

Haha. Well, thank you for the encouragement my friend. Now send me some of those sweet guitar riffs you've got laying around in your head somewhere ;-)

    2. Kel

Well done Michael. I'm sure it will get heard!

  18. Don't sacrifice dynamics for volume. Louder isn't always better….have to remind myself of this every now and then

  19. Lol. I'll second that....might have to add some Pink Floyd or Jimi Hendrix
  20. Just 10??? ;-) Well, let's see.... 1.) The Beatles: The White Album 2.) Bob Dylan: Blood on The Tracks 3.) The Police: Greatest Hits 4.) Nirvana: Nevermind 5.) David Gray: White Ladder 6.) Neil Young: Harvest 7.) Pearl Jam: Live on 2 Legs 8.) John Mayer: Continuum 9.) Red Hot Chili Peppers: Californication 10.) Eric Clapton: The Cream of Clapton
  21. David Gray - His entire 'White Ladder" album was done with no auto-tune Norah Jones - Classic and jazzy. A beautiful voice that can work with alot of different styles of music John Lennon - Made you feel every word he sang. Funny thing is, he hated his own voice. He was always telling his producers to put reverb and more EQ on his voice because he hated it so much
  22. sending out about 25 copies of my EP. I'd rather be playing and writing....

  23. Thanks, David! I took this pic when I was recording a new song with a pick, I really didn't even notice it there lol. Thanks for the reminder of the copyright info, I got it updated. And a special thanks for all the help and insght on the songs over the past few months!
  24. Hello all! I usually stick to the songwriting and recording critique board, but I wanted to share my newest 5-song EP with everyone on the boards. I would love for everyone to take a minute and check it out. The EP is free, so I hope everyone who wants a copy is able to get it. http://michaelstovall.bandcamp.com -Michael P.S. A special thanks to everyone on the boards for their encouragement and insight! I can't say enough how much it has meant to me. This EP would have never been released without the help of this forum.
