  1. I should really get myself organised a bit better. I have lost so much material to computer failure, but I still back up infrequently! My lyrics are scattered to the four corners of the attic in various, decomposing carrier bags! :-/

  2. 85 pounds? Computer Music is about £6 GB here, Not sure what the postage would cost? I can find out if you like? Where are you? It's a very good magazine, but does tend to blind you with everything new! I used to subscribe to it, but stopped when I realised it was too intense! I was wishing for everytthing that came out, and not getting any music done! If you can get the cover DVD, it has a great software collection attached, with a huge array of samples. Have a look at their website. Loads of tutorials on there.

  3. When you write a song, how do you store all the various parts? Lyrics, music, recordings. Do you get everything together and stick it in a folder? What?

I'm a bit of a slob when it comes to my songs. I have no idea where anything is any more! I've been trying to find some of my old recordings with the view of trying to improve them! Maybe kick me into writing mode again. But I can't find anything!

  4. A friend of mine who worked in a music shop once had to help with a delivery. It was a huge Hammond organ, and it was to be delivered up several floors in a block of flats. (arpartments) It wouldn't fit in the lift so they had to cart it up the stairwell. Halfway up, they took a break! Whereupon an old spinster came trucling down the stairs and couldn't get by! The delivery guy looked her straight in the eye and declared, 'My organ seems to be blocking your passage madam!' I'm told this was met with a stoney silence and a look to make the dead turn in their graves!

  5. If you want to play Rock, I'd advise buying a guitar to suit! i.e. An electric with a suitable Amp. If you are new to the guitar, I would seriously think about an accoustic guitar. An Accoustic is always readily available. You can pick it up and play it instantly! You can take it anywhere without worrying about plugging it in when you get there!. And they have a lovely tone and a personal appeal. When you go to buy it, (whatever you decide on) there are a few things to look out for. The first thing to look for is playability! If you can't play it comfortably, you'll never be happy with it! If you are not a competent player, try to take somebody who is, with you! Have a look along the neck. Stand the guitar at your feet and look down the neck from the headstock to the bridge.

Then turn it over so the headstock is on the floor and look down the neck.

The neck should have no serious kinks or twists. If it does, forget it! Next, look at the string height. If the strings are too high off the fretboard, then it will be difficult to play!

Then play it and listen to the sound! (Accoustic) If it sounds good with no obvious defects, and you are happy and comfortable with it! Buy it! And then post a picture of it here. :) Good luck.

  6. The MD of the little theatre needs a sharp word, I reckon.

So - even as a rough rule of thumb it only sometimes works.

Most of the time it doesn't.

Can we just throw it away, please ?

On yer bike matey! It's worked for me on many many occasions! I haven't worked out a song in years! But when I was playing regularly, I was the one working out all the numbers. Usually from a crappy cassette recording. I used this method if I couldn't quickly work out the key! And it worked for me. It may not work on your type of music, but for pop music! It worked fine.

  7. As for finding the Key. I was once told by the musical director of the little theatre, Bristol, that the 3rd note of a piece of music will (almost) always give you the basic key! I have used this theory on many occasions and always found it to work! But the stuff I was trying to work out was pretty simple poppy type stuff!

  8. Lazz, I know we've had our differences so I approach this with a note of caution.

    Technically, that's not a C major chord. That's a C7.

And there was me thinking it was a Cmaj7 ???

  9. With any guitar, you need to try it before you buy it. If you are not confident of trying it yourself, get somebody to try it for you. You really need to sit down with it and play it for a while. That way, you get the 'feel' of it. Not every guitar will feel comfortable to you. The plethora of cheap guitars coming from China has pushed the price right down. And I have tried some excellent guitars in this price range! In fact! I am going with a mate (next week) who wants to buy an accoustic guitar himself. His budget is the same as yours, but he wants my opinion on the guitar before he decides!

  10. Guess not! I did own a copy for a short while. It came bundled with a Delta 66 soundcard I bought. Sadly, the card would not work with my chipset, so I sold it! Along with the gig studio. (Might have been giga piano?) The piano sound on giga was truely fantastic!

  11. The program looks amazing I have to say but to be honest no matter how good it is I would never pay over £50 for any kind of software.

    Cheapskate! ^_^

I have to say, I think this looks pretty cool. I am seriously considering getting something like this! Steves review was a pretty damn good review and I like his approach in getting down to the nitty gritty, but writing it so that idiots like me can understand. He was obviously quite taken with this piece of software! I've been pretty busy this wweek, but I might download the demo and have a butchers!
