This is the cheapest I could find, at just over 70 quid.Might be worth checking ebay. You never know your luck!

Hey Chris, have a look here. Pretty much explains everything you need to know about Band in a Box.
-
Not meant to be rules at all (as there aren't any in any creative endeavor ) more like guidelines.
And if you start that chorus (isn't it really just a vocal group?) krap again, I WILL take you out to the woodshed and whip yer behind.

Interesting. I don't agree with some of it. i.e.
The words should read like a normal sentence - do not invert word order for the sake of rhyme:
Lots of folk music that would have trouble with that premise. ! And I think it's ok to invert word order. As I've done myself in the recent 'Empty Spaces' lyric.
The chorus words and music should be the same each time it is used.
Don't agree with that at all! (What's a chorus?)
But not a bad set of guidelines to run by!

The difference here is that we…. us lot… have to find ways to become familiar with and make sense of the ambiguous ‘common usage’ adopted by you lot – while you lot get away with operating in proudly isolated ignorance of what is regarded as ‘common usage’ amongst us lot.
Us lot have to learn two languages but you lot obstinately accept only the more inferior amateur one.
You're an old pro aren't you.

The important thing being to write good songs regardless of terminology and get the big bucks and the girls!

Sounds good.

The difference may be that amongst all the lyric and song writers here gathered. There is only one professional. The rest of us are amatuers and hobby writers. I have been enlightened by the wisdom of Lazz. I am always keen to learn from somebody more experienced than I (In any field) That doesn't mean that I am entertaining the thought that my writing habits will change! I have no illusions that I will ever become a songwriter of any renoun. But that doesn't mean I'll stop writing. The fact remains that if I post a lyric to this forum, I would gennerally write 'Verse Chorus' because that has become the standard terms of use in this and many other such places. I will continue to write the way I always have, which is like this.
As you can see, this is 'Empty Spaces'
This is how I write. I place neither marker header to delineate my 'Verses' and 'Chorus'. I use the tab. Unfortunately, when I copy and paste into this forum, the text becomes justified left, rendering my clearly defined sections useless! As can be seen here.
What I would say to all here is this. Lazz is an accomplished and talented songwriter. he works with exceptionally talented musicians, singers, songwriters and artists. His mutterings are to be taken seriously. If you have ambitions to be a serious songwriter. Take the job seriously! For that is what it is. A job! And like any other job. If you want to get ahead, learn to do the job to the best of your ability! If, like me, you have no such ambitions and write because you enjoy writing, then you can afford to be slovenly. like me!
Interesting line this thread has taken!

Great! Can we borrow her?

Also I need to know which instrument is responsible for playing the chords. Thanks for the advice btw.
The Bass player would play the root not of any chord. The 'Lead' guitar should also be playing chords, either by strumming the chord or playing as an arpeggio (The notes of a chord) untill his guitar solo (should there be one) Then back to the rhythm guitar.

The Tascam looks pretty good, and with Eight mic/line inputs plus an additional six line inputs, I'd say that was more than enough for your needs. I would invest in some more mics and try to get the drums individually mic'ed, That way, you can have much more control over the sound of each drum/cymbal. Once you have them all recorded, you can do what you like with them! Add reverb to the Bass drum, bring the snare forward and make it a little snappier! Whatever? with 14 inputs, you have enough for the rest of the band as well. Get some blanking screens around the kit when recording to lessen any bleed from the other instruments. And I would also damp each drum when recording as well. boomy drums don't tend to record well. If you want boomy? Put it on after! Drummer in my last band would have a blanket or two in the bass drum, and tissue paper taped to the toms and snare to cut any natural reverb. Not right over the skin, just a wad on one side.

Heres whats going on.
Were 2-3 weeks away from having our presskit done.
its looking good with a couple of reviews, 5 song EP, 2 photos, contact info. Bio, lyric sheet..
a button and sticker and past/future shows.
We have a street team as of this weekend and some hot chics that sell our EP at borderline and click-clack ( very popular alternative clothing stores in Toronto).
now 2 questions, would you recommend to put together an EPK as well? and why?
what else can we be doing for promotion?
what do i do to get more people to our shows!?
Thanks!
-Adam Rave
The obvious reply would be, 'Why didn't we know about this here?' This is the first I've heard of it! Make use of any and all opportunities! You should have this in your sig! You should also contact John about a press release through the rss feeds! You can have an ad on the Songstuff front page! (we get an awful lot of people through here you know!) You should be plugin this on these (and other) boards! I'll buy your CD! I always buy indie releases from regular forumners! I'm sure there are others here who would also buy your CD. Get selling it man! The internet is a wonderfull place! Make use of it. Do you have a songstuff artist page? If you do, I'll make you the featured artist on the Songstuff Myspace page.

HOW WOULD I WORK THIS OUT?
USUALLY WHEN I SING THE DOGS IN THE AREA COME RUNNING
When you sing, the dogs in Torquay start howling...
-
There's a thread in the vocal section on working out harmony backing vocals. I thought it might be interesting to see how you work out any harmony guitar parts you might play? So, do you use any harmony guitar? How do you work out the parts? Do you write them out in notation or tab? Or do you just play it by ear?
-
For those of you in bands, do you use a lot of backing vocals? If you do, are the parts written or improvised more?
Do you write out the parts? How? Do you have any examples we can look at? Or can you explain the process you work to?
I'm really quite interested in this!

No.
Eh?
Eh?
Eh?
No.
I tend to start most of my songs in the same key. (Not always) Sometimes I have to transpose to a different key when I can't reach certain notes. One thing I have noticed over the past few years, is my voice has changed! I used to be able to sing very high falsetto , now I can't sing falsetto at all! But I can also not sing any lower than I could before!

Wow, you have google there!

USE YOUR LOCAL MUSIC SHOP.
If you don't! There won't be any local music shops.
The Elixer strings are great! They appear to be keeping their brightness, although it's still too early to judge. They feel good under the fingers and the 'squeal' is much less noticeable!
