Songstuff Writer and Artist Development Challenges

    By john

Independent writers and artists face several large disadvantages when they are compared to signed, mainstream writers and artists.  Disadvantages that add up to making it a competition that indies can’t win. Hell they can’t even compete.   Lack of budget and poor contacts are fairly obvious disadvantages. Lack of experience and a lack of knowledge restricts songwriters and artists alike. Lack of an overall strategy, and a limited set of incomplete tactics, makes for a critical problem

Trending Long-Term Radio Listening Habits

Nielsen Soundscan  have been examining the changing listening trends within the world of radio.  They’ve been looking at the impact of shifting habits and cyclical trends. When trends appearing in the data are combined with Nielsen’s February Portable People Meter (PPM) ratings, Nielsen have been able to assess  cycles and changes in the data over a significant period of time.   Nielsen have been comparing eight years of monthly data sets. Essentially, they have been using the same for

Sensory Walk

A Most Wonder-filled Walk. 🏃‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️🚶🏽‍♂️   The other day, I went for a walk after being shut in for the winter season. 🌥  It was a fairly warm day for what we’ve been having.  It wasn’t one of those days where all was beautifully new and lovely to behold. 🤧   I decided rather than let my mind wander on this walk or going for a power walk, this walk was going to be a sensory walk.👟🚶🏼‍♀️   If you’re like me and you find the demands in your life can at times feel ove

New Venture

I just recently started a new venture!  It was my first stab at interviewing for Songstuff.  I had the privilege of interviewing my very first lyricist, Patty Lakamp, and what a pleasure it was interviewing her.  You all should get to know her.  She is a delightful lady.  I hope you get the chance to interact with her on Songstuff.     I would like to hear that you read the article, but if you didn’t, I’ll let you know that she has been a journalist.  Would I ever love to hear about he

Setting up my studio

This year I've promised to release my 2nd album and since I do all the mixing/mastering down the basement I have to do something about the acoustic environment. I just wanted to share the work progress with you. Feel free to share your thoughts about it!!   I've started in the front by building 2 decent bass traps that work really well to absorb a wide range of frequencies according to the LE/DE principals. I know, the fabric could be nicer but that's what I had Noted: Never fill the t

Jigsaw Sequence Music Releases

I thought I would use this place to give an idea of what I am hoping to achieve over the coming year in relation to music releases.   Currently I have one single released on 01/12/2017 - Heroes, which is currently featured on this site.   I have a second single - Beyond The Veil - ready for release, but I am trying to identify a list of songs at the moment that I can use with BTV for an EP and future EP's. I have an idea of each EP having around four songs, two being a bit mo

What good can come out of a divorce?

Hi again! It’s been a while, that’s for sure. So… my wife left me a couple of months ago. I’ve been kind of busy getting used to this new life of mine. It didn't come as a shock but still, you never know what to expect. The hardest part has been seeing my children sad and confused… both me and my ex wife are determined to make this as less painful for them as possible is but even if you try the hardest you can they will get really sad. My youngest, a boy of 6, is at pre school and it’s re

Creativity Killers and Creativity Stimulators

Creativity Killers and Creativity Stimulators   So what stimulates creativity and what kills it?  Well, I don't pretend to have all the answers to that and as a matter of fact, lets just say I'm on an exploration trying to figure it out.  I still find it a challenge at times to pull out that creativity. I seem to be more in tune with what the creativity killers are in my life. I've discovered that feeling overwhelmed is one of the biggest creativity, in fact, brain activity k

Nashville is my home

It seems strange that I never dared to dream that Nashville would be my home. Yet, here I am living just north of it and driving in to see it's unmistakable skyline every weekday! I'm HERE!!! I have to tell anyone who wants to be in the music business, that yes being in Nashville is better for your career. I have not yet set all my music goals into motion and have already gotten networking connections without even trying. I will always consider Nashville my home from now on. I have no

performance

I played very poorly at the last gig (last week). I was using my preferred guitar of the moment and my old faithful Fender amp, but the sound was all wrong. It may have been because the people were mostly pretty far back from the band. We were on a high-ish stage too. The sound wasn't the usual warm subtle tone I am used to. It was stark & harsh. A poor tone limits what I can play. Some people dont understand that. I dont fully understand it myself but I cant change it. Fortunately everyone

Memories and music

Oh dear....(sigh) the beginning of something is always the most awkward part...so I’m just going to break in by making conversation with my imaginary audience and if I get a reply, whoa!  I’ll have to give my imagination some major credit!   I thought I would start by commenting about one of a few amazing abilities music has.  The ability to bring forth memories.     My earliest recollections of my personal taste in music began with those vinyl 45s.  I had some stories such a

The Beautiful Feeling of Worthlessness

I have been thinking about this for a while. What makes a human pursue “meaning” in life? What is it that brings a sense of purpose to one's existence? It sounds like fancy philosophical anecdotal small talk. But truly, this is at the very core of whatever we do in life. In every single decision we make, tiny or large. That's when I realised that it's not the "quarter life crisis" talking but that it's an absolutely essential conversation I needed to have with myself.    Being a musician

Not steering this wheel

This is a learning, probing adventure to discover exciting new sounds, methods, personalities and plans (of others I might add as I am flying by the seat of my pants at the moment).  These wheels are turning, but where the destination we’ll be led to is a surprise to even the one in the driver’s seat.  Let the adventure begin!

Musicians are 3 times More Likely to Suffer from Depression

In a recent study conducted by the University of Westminster, it has been found that there is crisis in mental health within the U.K. music industry that is at alarming levels. The study, “Can Music Make You Sick” was commissioned by Help Musicians UK. It looks at how having a career in the music industry impacts upon the mental health of musicians.   2,211 musicians took part in the study. insomnia

Insomnia Last night: I return home following an evening of dancing. I pour myself a glass of wine. I try to watch a bit of TV but fall asleep on the sofa at around 12.30.   I rouse at 2.55, take my prescribed relaxant & go to bed. At 4.10 I give up trying to sleep and get up again. I’m tired but I know its pointless trying to sleep anymore. I read my e-mails and respond to one of them. When this happened last week, I sat up and read in bed. I read for 3 ho

IsoVox 2 Review

IsoVox 2 Review     Getting a good vocal sound takes a lot of preparation. The size and shape of te room you record in, the ambient noise from electronic and other sources. In a home studio environment the issues are multiplied. For a start, not everyone has a dedicated studio, and even less are acoustically treated to both reduce spill onto recordings, and spill from the studio to the outside, or to shape the sound recorded by dealing with hot frequencies and reverberation.

Beautiful

My apologies for posting 2 in a row but I just got an email that one of my songs has been featured on GodTube.   The Artist is `Sheaam Dean` who is resident in Sri Lanka. I crafted the lyric to a rough melody that my co-writer Andy Gatford sent me. Las Vegas Pianist Dave Haertel di the piano and string arrangement and I produced Sheaam's vocals remotely.   Award winning producer Giampaolo Pasquile mixed and mastered the song and it was released as a single and is also on an E

Don't wait too long

I've just had notification that my song "Don't take too long"  is under consideration for the American artist Faith Hill's next album. I won't know until the beginning of August whether it has been successful or not. Here is the lyric. Wish me luck.   Don’t Take Too Long Lyric by: Raymond Fry & Steve Manning   Verse 1: As you step into the future I may never see, Let yourself become the person you could really be. Retire

I took early retirement by means of voluntary redundancy today. The consultation was last Thursday and my employment ended today. Said my goodbyes to some great workmates and took all my 'stuff' home. It looks weird. All this stuff that doesn't belong in the house is here. Not just tools & books, but works mug, cutlery and tea caddy etc.   I've worked with some of these fellows for more than 30 years. Its pretty emotional, and leaving is a bittersweet experience. I will meet up wit
