    Off The Record

From the album: Off The Record

The new band ... well, kind of new!
  2. "One chord is fine. Two chords is pushing it. Three chords and you're into jazz." So says, the great Lou Reed!

  3. I remember this tune. Liked it then and love it now Throw away tune? Man I wish I had written a song 1/4 as good as your throw away songs. I agree with Mahesh. Beautiful. Sorry about the tide btw. My son is graduating FSU this year. He is still sobbing over the Noles loss. I am a Penn Stater, so I can't stand Ohio State. Was rooting for Bama. I wanted an Tide/Noles finish. No such luck. Dave
  4. Was that a G# or an Ab?

    1. Just1L

I don't think it was Ab … possibly InBev though.

    2. Dave Bradley

      No...it was a Cb, sorry, no, I mean E#

  5. Definately don't want to go direct with an acoustic. With all of the bells and whistles and simulated amp sounds in Logic, going direct with electric is preferred imo. On the other hand, the sound of an acoustic direct pales in comparison to a properly mic'd acoustic. You will have to play around with the mic location to get the sound you prefer, but I place the mic at the height of the sound hole angled towards the neck end of the sound hole. I sit with the acoustic about 1 to 2 feet away, perhaps farther if I am strumming and get a sound I am pretty happy with. Of course alot depends on the acoustic you are using as far as tone goes. I generally stay away from the preset acoustic sounds in logic as i like the pure acoustic tone of my Martin. I might add a bit of chorus and reverb but generally it is a pure acoustic sound from the guitar and mic. I am playing a Martin D28 and mic it with a $100 Samson condenser mic and am very happy with the sound. Best of luck.
  6. Hey I have more posts than you Alan but a lesser rating. I don't get it. What kind of bribe did he make with you John? Michael ... very clever!

    My old defunct band
  8. Well, here is some of it. My go to guitar is the Fender Tele Deluxe that I bought in 78 and has never left my possession since. The Am. Std. Strat I bought new back in 2011. Though I hate buying guitars off of Ebay, the Ric was purchased a few years back, as well off of ebay. I saw it and fell in love with it. Actually it looks far better than it sounds. My go to acoustic is the Martin HD 28V. Love it. It never leaves home. I also have an old Washburn and a Taylor 214CE black, not pictured here. Both the twin reverb and boogie amps are gone. The twin just got too heavy to lug around and the boogie I could never quite dial in. I traded for an egnater rebel 30 and a princeton reverb (both not pictured here). The pedalboard is pretty current, except I swapped out the ts 808 hard wire for the vintage reissue shown. I also swapped the tc delay for the mxr carbon copy. Otherwise, it is the same. Love this thread and love seeing these great guitars.
  9. My namesake so to speak: "Blinded By The Light" Words & Music by Bruce Springsteen 1973 Madman drummers bummers and Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat With a boulder on my shoulder, feelin' kinda older, I tripped the merry-go-round With this very unpleasing sneezing and wheezing, the calliope crashed to the ground Some all-hot half-shot was headin' for the hot spot, snappin' his fingers, clappin' his hands And some fleshpot mascot was tied into a lover's knot with a whatnot in her hand And now young Scott with a slingshot finally found a tender spot and throws his lover in the sand And some bloodshot forget-me-not whispers, "Daddy's within earshot, save the buckshot, turn up the band" And she was blinded by the light Cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night Blinded by the light She got down but she never got tight, but she'll make it alright Some brimstone baritone anti-cyclone rolling stone preacher from the East He says, "Dethrone the dictaphone, hit it in its funny bone, that's where they expect it least" And some new-mown chaperone was standin' in the corner all alone, watchin' the young girls dance And some fresh-sown moonstone was messin' with his frozen zone to remind him of the feeling of romance Yeah, he was blinded by the light Cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night Blinded by the light He got down but he never got tight, but he's gonna make it tonight Some silicone sister with her manager's mister told me I got what it takes She said, "I'll turn you on, sonny, to something strong if you play that song with the funky break" And Go-Cart Mozart was checkin' out the weather chart to see if it was safe to go outside And little Early-Pearly came by in her curly-wurly and asked me if I needed a ride Oh, some hazard from Harvard was skunked on beer, playin' backyard bombardier Yes, and Scotland Yard was trying hard, they sent some dude with a calling card, he said, "Do what you like, but don't do it here" Well, I jumped up, turned around, spit in the air, fell on the ground and asked him which was the way back home He said, "Take a right at the light, keep goin' straight until night, and then, boy, you're on your own" And now in Zanzibar, a shootin' star was ridin' in a side car, hummin' a lunar tune Yes, and the avatar said, "Blow the bar but first remove the cookie jar, we're gonna teach those boys to laugh too soon" And some kidnapped handicap was complainin' that he caught the clap from some mousetrap he bought last night Well, I unsnapped his skull cap and between his ears I saw a gap but figured he'd be all right He was just blinded by the light Cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night Blinded by the light Mama always told me not to look into the sights of the sun Oh, but Mama, that's where the fun is I was blinded I was blinded I was blinded

    Tuners

I have two pedalboards and on one I have a Korg Pitchblack and a TC Electronics Polytune on the other. Both serve their purpose very well and are fairly inexpensive if you can get a used one on ebay. That is what I did. Dave
  11. I love these guys ... I believe them to be the closest thing to a current day Simon & Garfunkel that exists. Awesome! The Milk Carton Kids: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2ym4RZ8IR0

  13. Hello Svetlana and welcome to Songstuff. There are a number of fine companies that make reasonably priced acoustic-electrics. Takamine, Yamaha, Washburn & Seagull are among many. Of course, it all depends upon how these guitars sound and feel to you. There are many many models to choose from, different electrical systems, woods, body shapes. It is all personal taste, but certainly the brands I mentioned have some finely crafted reasonable priced guitars. Good luck. Dave
  14. Not to mention The Band/The Big Pink ... I give up
  15. Have every single one of mine on vinyl except August and everything After. If we are picking Police albums though I would bring Outandos D'amour or Regatta De Blanc. Man, I forgot Van Morrison/Moondance ... This is too hard. How can I leave Pet Sounds off the list. Dek, find a new game , this is impossible

I would have listed his entire catalogue, but that wouldn't have been any fun. Honorable Mention goes to Tull and Aqualung. Dave
  17. Always loved Kasim Sulton's bass playing in Utopia's Singring and the Glass Guitar. Check it out beginning at 27 seconds. I love the melodic nature of the solo and it just is a rush everytime I hear it. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oz76Mxb2kEw
  18. Congrats on the Martin. I have a D-28 that is my go to recording guitar. When I play out though I use my Taylor. I don't let my Martin leave the house. If you ever get to Nazareth, PA. Take a tour of the Martin factory. It will blow your mind to watch these craftsmen at work. Dave
  19. Hey Bobby, Glad you found Songstuff. Welcome to the site! A wonderful place with many wonderful people and musicians. Kel, I couldn't recommend Bobby more to put a solid production together. Shotgun Justice was a tune I sent to him to produce and arrange and get quality players, including himself, to play on and he returned a recording beyond what I had ever imagined. He is a top notch musician, producer and writer. Last, but not least, he is a good guy too. Dave
  20. Hey Kel, I echo David's response. By the way, Springsteen is my musical idol and I love his vocal. You are right though. It is not a pure vocal, like lets say a James Taylor might have. To me, anyone can sing their own tunes as long as they can stay on pitch. That is the key. The timber, tone and dynamics of the vocal will change with every performer, but that is why there is chocolate and vanilla. If you can achieve staying on pitch, you can sing. I am in the same camp as David. I really don't like my vocals at all and was embarrassed to even post my songs here when I first began. If you look at some older recordings of mine I always doubled my vocals because I thought they were so weak and I thought doubling made them sound stronger. I have gotten more and more confident with each song, but I still can't stand the sound of my own voice. To me it is like fingernails on a chalkboard. I think most people don't like the sound of their own vocals. For me, I have never aimed to be a performer and don't particularly want to be. I like playing guitar in the background in a garage band. I don't aim to be out front. I really only want to record passable demos so others hopefully will find them interesting and possibly record them. It sounds like you may want a bit more than that. Regardless, I think "pitch" is the key. From there, singing YOUR songs over and over again, as only you know how to sing them, will eventually result in a "style." Style has to come naturally, imo, ... it is not something you manufacture. I hope this gives a bit of insight. Good luck. Dave
