  • Songstuff Writer and Artist Development Challenges

    By john

Independent writers and artists face several large disadvantages when they are compared to signed, mainstream writers and artists.  Disadvantages that add up to making it a competition that indies can’t win. Hell they can’t even compete.   Lack of budget and poor contacts are fairly obvious disadvantages. Lack of experience and a lack of knowledge restricts songwriters and artists alike. Lack of an overall strategy, and a limited set of incomplete tactics, makes for a critical problem

Stop And Listen!

The world has become such a busy place. Deadlines, schedules, priorities, it's never ending. In such a time, we tend to overlook things that would have made the biggest difference in our lives. Washington Post conducted an experiment that went on to prove this very point. It was in January 2007 when Joshua Bell , a violinist, performed a few classical pieces on the Washington D.C Subway as he stood there, incognito. Most of the passersby hurried on without noticing the rare event that

Paranormal Activity?

Paranormal activity? Proof of life after death? Wishful thinking? Hell, I don't know. While I've had a few "unexplained" type things happen to me throughout my lifetime, I don't really believe in life after death or that kind of thing. At the same time, I don't look a gift horse in the mouth and peacefully enjoy moments that seem to be "after life" type of experiences. In that respect, I'll share a story that happened to me last year after my Mom passed away. An experience that I'd like to

The Pentatonic Scale And The Human Brain.

The Pentatonic Scale is something that almost every musician would have learnt in their early days. No matter the genre, the Pentatonic Scale proves to be a very powerful tool in improvising solos. Even though less is known about how the human brain interprets music, it's been observed that it responds to recognizable patterns such as the Pentatonic quite instinctively. Jazz vocalist Bobby McFerrin demonstrated this theory at the World Science Festival in 2009 when he participated in a talk

Youtube/google Issue

Hello all. Hopefully this isn't in any sort of violation with the blog/site rules. While it is not 100% about music, it could be relative to anyone using YouTube with monetization for any of their songs. Also, just in case I show up missing one day, you may know why. I've had my monetization disabled in YouTube for reasons explained below. This is in response to a comment saying it was disabled because I tried to make a second Adsense Account while trying to access Analytics with my original ema

My Idea For My Band Rusted Apple

good evning everyone! my idea for Rusted Apple was: A folk punk band that consists of me as rhythm guitar and vocals and a two other member playing bass and drums.. but that idea slowly failed as no one would stay dedicated and they only said they played guitar good and or drums great...they did not show shit... the new idea is gonna be rock, shoegaze and some synth...(maybe). mid-tempo speed rock nothing metal at all but it will be heavy..my aim for my next ep is all originals (for t

A Plan To Release Your Music

We have a lot of members releasing songs and albums just now. However, very, very few, if any, use any form of release process. In particular, there is very little in the way of build up to the release. Releases tend to be haphazard in nature. On many occasions impatience to share their new music seems to be the driving factor. All the artist's development time and budget leading up to the release is devoted to creating the music with marketing and promoting their release bei

It Is Official, Christine Mcvie Is Back With Fleetwood Mac

It's been all over the music press for a while now, will she, won't she. This includes a live appearance on stage in London to play the group's hit, "Don't Stop". Well, now it's official. Christine McVie is back with Fleetwood Mac. Liz Rosenberg, the band's publicist, confirmed that McVie has rejoined the band she left almost 16 years ago in 1998. According to Rosenberg, Christine McVie "has indeed re-joined Fleetwood Mac and we are hoping to make an announcement about a possible tour

Holidays

Holidays should be fun and spending time with your family. For me it's work, work, work and pretending to be happy that I'm with my family. I'm just glad I'm spending new years eve with my friends. They're more family to me than my real one. I've been spending so much time learning to play 'Jingle Bells' on my guitar. I know it wasn't perfect (far from) but I played it for my family on Christmas eve. My sister was verry enthousiastic. Said I've learned a lot and it keeps getting better

Thoughts Thoughts Thoughts

Tired of this country!! (Belgium) People are so unfriendly and so bussy with theirself. I work in a store... So being polite and helpfull is something I do every day and even when I'm not working I'll continue doing that. Always wanted to move to Scotland or Wales. Been on vacation there and the people are all so warm and polite. Or most of them... Anyway, nature is so amazing!! So many castles to visit Over here it's all buildings and buildings and more buildings. Not much nature

The Start

Looking back it has been such an experience being here on the forum. In the past few months I've been here I've learned so much and I've began to see some poeple on here as 'friends'. I really would miss them if they suddenly would vanish from this forum. Don't know if they feel the same about it but that's not the point I guess. I've always loved writing. I've began to write my first poems when I was 11-12 years old. Stupid English poems full of spelling mistakes Some in Dutch/Fle

Thoughts: Time

Time. Relative, Biologic? What is time? Can you sense it? Can you feel it shift between the sporadic and constant? Does it even really exist? Or is it just some innate phenonmenon humanity has fabricated to comfort themselves into believing there's always more.... time. But there really isn't more time for us, is there? Atleast in the perspective of those of us in physical form, that is. We're so fast-paced these days. Constant moving and chatter, consumed by electronics and virtu

Review This Song "stellar"

These are the lyrics to a song called Stellar. Please review. I'm floating into the stratosphere, I'm talking to the stars; Asking them directions of where you are, From the meteor that passes by ; I'm guessing if you're near or far. The earth revolves in circles, Time goes the other way; Everything's in slow motion, Still you're light years away; I'll search the solar system, I'm thinking of what you'd say. On my journey through other galaxy, A

Fires In Australia.

I know there are a few Aussies on this site. Just hoping everyone is safe wherever they are! My daughter has lost her house in the Blue mountains. My other daughters best friend has also lost her house (Susan Antonio who just joined this site recently) and many other friends of theirs have also lost homes or are being impacted by fires in some way or another. It's been the most frightening experience for our family as most of my family live right in Winmalee where over 200 houses hav

Vocals - Thoughts

It's been a long time since I've scratched any thoughts here. I'm feeling particularly irritable due to the insanity of insomnia. 7 am was my bedtime this morning. Anyway. My daughter wants to write and sing songs so maybe I should steer her over here. I think I will. She's my biggest fan, bless her cotton socks. I just wanted to say something about vocals actually, from a non professional position obviously. Others may have much more valuable thoughts. This is just my perspectiv

#1 Burning Potions With The Moonlight (Hocus Pocus)

So since I'm already here, I'm going post some lyrics. I'm not that confident about my lyrics, but I'm posting it anyway. Now this one, I'm not sure about the title and the last chorus, and I feel the choruses are too short. Anyway, feedback please! The copyright at the bottom probably not necessary (who will steal this anyway) but just to be safe. Burning Potions with the Moonlight (Hocus Pocus) Underneath the wicked full-blown moon Got a set of spells I wanna try out Prey all you

A Blog!

Hi, everyone. I just made an account today, and I'm going to use this blog to post all my lyrics. I write lyrics in my spare time, and since I'm not doing anything with it, I thought I could give it to someone who can actually make music out of it. If you see something you like, just contact me. You need my confirmation to use it, but I don't mind if you make some changes to it. I don't require money, but I want to hear the finished product and be credited for the lyrics.

#14 Personal Growth - No, It's Not A Tumor!

Have you ever stopped to look at where you are, and compare it to where you were? I have, but accidentally. By accidentally, I mean I didn't put myself into the famous "The Thinker" pose, or even sit back and consider life in general. No I was playing some of my own songs, and noticed some rather profound differences between then and now, and it got me thinking... I have been writing songs on and off for over 40 years. I know, you don't get that for murder! Funnily enough, usually

#13 Why Do I Need Scales? I'm Not A Fish!

In the past, I came up with melodies using my keyboard, or on rare occasions, my guitar. Never in my wildest dreams would I think of singing to work out a melody. Why? Because I was horrible. When talents were being handed out, I was out in the back yard building a billy cart. As a non performing songwriter I didn't pay much attention to the melody line, figuring a "singer" would be able to sing what I wrote. I wasn't a singer I told myself, but a real one could do it. In time past I barely

The Newbie

Hello there... I'm a lyricist but I can sing my own songs and it already has melodies. The problem is... I don't know how to play any instruments. I'm hoping to find a collaborator... preferably, a composer. Here's a sample of my song entitled Overruled by Emotions. I. Most people say eyes Are the entrance to a person's soul We can see truths or lies Sometimes we just ignore Oftentimes we never ever talk about it at all But when you look at me There is something tha
